Capital Punishment
CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
SHOULD IT BE ABOLISHED?

Capital punishment or the death penalty is a legal process whereby a person is put to death by the state as a punishment for a crime. The judicial decree that someone be punished in this manner is a death sentence, while the actual process of killing the person is an execution. Currently, 58 nations actively practise it, and 97 countries have abolished it.

The real question that arises is whether it should be abolished or not. People have various views and arguments regarding Capital Punishment. Some people think that it should be abolished while some think it should not be abolished. I find abolishing Capital Punishment more reasonable rather than practising it.
"A man who realizes his mistake and repents for it is a chastened man". Such people who realize and repent for their mistakes usually not only become law abiding citizens but also become social reformers. The society plays an important role in inciting the man towards crime and it owes him at least a chance to realize his part or full and improve. However, the capital punishment strikes at the very root of this possibility. Besides a true moral punishment is the self-realization of the crime by the criminal and the death sentence simply deprives a man the opportunity to receive one is really aggrieved party. The argument that the fear of death will suppress the murderous instinct in the potential killers has been empirically found to be untenable. A comparative analysis of the statistics of murders in countries having death penalty with which have no death penalty reveals that there is no difference between the two when compared.
Another argument for why capital punishment shouldn’t be allowed is that it is a contradiction. Every single human has the right to life. Even if they have committed hideous crimes such as murder, at their core they still are human beings even though the actions they undertook were deviant from the norm. It may be argued that a

Gavrila utilizes the statistical data and policy interpretation of the capital punishment model which is extremely pertinent to my research paper. Within it, the author describes the growing trend towards a capital punishment while also looking at the policies of the 23 countries still utilizing capital punishment as a punishment method. An in-depth analysis of human rights laws and religious arguments are analyzed along with statistical data from organizations such as the United Nations and Amnesty International. This is an important paper for my utilization as the data is relevant and up to date and it explores the ethical issues of capital punishment while also putting to rest several arguments used by proponents of the capital punishment model. Above all else, this paper provides me with a clear and concise argument favoring the abolishment of capital punishment as a means of punishment for criminal offenders.…

For these reasons, and many others, the Supreme Court should rule all capital punishment as cruel and unusual punishment. It is not humane to torture and kill criminals. It is not helpful to the country in any way. And most importantly, it puts innocent lives at stake. If you support the death penalty, think about this: is it really worth killing innocent people, just to kill criminals as well? Doesn’t that make us, and the entire justice system, just as bad as the criminals? I do not think it is worth the…

As a deterrent to crime, the death penalty has little effect because the chances of a murder being sentenced to death are slim to none. However the death penalty deters some people. As the Royal Commission (1948–1953) observed in its lengthy and thoughtful report, “We can number its failures, but we cannot number its successes.”23 We can never know how many people who would have otherwise committed murder stopped them only because society threatened death as punishment. The deterrence question, really, is not whether the death penalty deters—sometimes it surely does—but whether, on balance, it deters more effectively than life without parole. (D’elia).…

Murder is wrong. Since childhood we have been taught this indisputable truth. Ask yourself, then, what is capital punishment? In its simplest form, capital punishment is defined as one person taking the life of another. Coincidentally, that is the definition of murder. There are 36 states with the death penalty, and they must change. These states need to abolish it on the grounds that it carries a dangerous risk of punishing the innocent, is unethical and barbaric, and is an ineffective deterrent of crime versus the alternative of life in prison without parole.…

" To take a life when a life has been lost is revenge, not justice" ( qtd. in Anti-Death Penalty). Capital punishment, or the death penalty, has been around in some sort of variation for centuries. It is enforced upon criminals who have been convicted of the most heinous crimes, such as homicide. There have been debates throughout time as whether or not the death penalty is appropriate punishment. Valid arguments of support and contradiction of capital punishment have come up over time, making citizens believe it is a tough decision for lawmakers to choose whether or not to allow the death penalty. The decision is simple. Capital Punishment should be abolished throughout the country because it is an unfair and unnecessary way of castigation that contains many flaws and serves no justice for those involved.…

The foremost reason being given for the imposition of capital punishment is its power to deter crimes. Capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, is the toughest form of punishment enforced today in the United States. According to the online Webster dictionary, capital punishment is defined as “the judicially ordered execution of a prisoner as a punishment for a serious crime, often called a capital offence or a capital crime” (1). In those jurisdictions that practice capital punishment, its use is usually restricted to a small number of criminal offences, principally, treason and premeditated murder. In the 38 U.S. states and within the federal government currently upholding and enforcing death penalty statutes, this method of punishment varies quite differently amongst them. It is a controversial issue that continues to be debated and overflowing with opinion and emotion by the American public. One of the biggest issues being debated is whether or not the death penalty is immoral, excessively cruel or inhumane. I support capital punishment and do not believe that it is cruel or inhumane but that it delivers a small sense of closure to the public. After all, aren’t we a society who has always lived by “an eye for an eye”?…

Capital Punishment is a very controversial issue that is sweeping the nation. While some feel that the death penalty serves as a rightful and just punishment to the crime that was committed, others feel that we as humans have the right to decide whether they die for the crimes they commit. The question at hand is does the death penalty serve a deterrent to crime? The death penalty does not serve as a deterrent to crime. “Capital punishment has always attracted controversy. Simply, the arguments for and against can be divided into four categories with a moral and a pragmatic argument on each side. The purpose of the death penalty is central to the debate. Punishment can be seen as serving three purposes: retribution, deterrence and reformation. The death penalty can have no reformative purpose in terms of re-establishing 'a good citizen '. Therefore, the case for it must rely on retribution and deterrence. The pragmatic justification for the death penalty sees it as a unique and effective deterrent, which therefore protects society” (Von Drehle, 2008, p. 38).…
