LITERATURE REVIEW

A lot of investigators have studied working capital from different perspective and in different Surroundings. The subsequent ones were quite appealing and constructive for our study. The connection between profitability and liquidity was observed, as calculated by Current ratio on a section of joint stock businesses in Saudi Arabia via correlation and regression analysis. The learning established that the cash adaptation cycle was of more significance as a computation of liquidity than the current ratio that changes profitability. The volume variable was found to have major outcome on profitability at the industry altitude. The consequences were steady and had essential propositions for liquidity administration in different Saudi companies. Primary, it was obvious that there was a negative correlation between profitability and liquidity pointers for instance current ratio in the Saudi model studied. Next, the reading also discovered that there was enormous divergence between manufacturing businesses regarding the important computation of liquidity: (Eljelly, 2004)

A large amount of companies had a huge sum of cash installed in working capital. It can thus be anticipated that the manner in which working capital is administered will have a considerable outcome on profitability of those companies. By means of correlation and regression investigations we institute a considerable negative connection between gross operating returns and the amount of days accounts receivable, supplies stock and accounts payable of companies. On the root of these outcomes it is recommended that directors or executives could generate significance for their stockholders by dropping the quantity of days’ accounts receivable and inventories to a sensible lowest level. The direct opposite connection between accounts payable and profitability is steady with the analysis that lower profitable companies stay longer to reimburse their invoices.
(Deloof, 2003)

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of working capital management practices on the financial performance of SSEs in Kisii South District. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design which allowed the collection of primary quantitative data through structured questionnaires. The target population was 159 managers of 101 trading and 58 manufacturing SSEs. Stratified random sampling technique was used to obtain a sample of 113 SSEs comprising 72 trading and 41 manufacturing enterprises. The data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Consequently, the findings of the study were that, working capital management practices were low amongst SSEs as majority had not adopted formal working capital management routines and their financial performance was on a low average. The study also revealed that SSE financial performance was positively related to efficiency of cash management (ECM), efficiency of receivables management (ERM) and efficiency of inventory management (EIM) at 0.01 significance level. The coefficient of determination (R2) indicated that 63.4% of the variations in financial performance (FP) could be explained by changes in ECM, ERM and EIM. The study concluded that working capital management practices have influence on the financial performance of SSEs, hence there was need for SSE managers to embrace efficient working capital management practices as a strategy to improve their financial performance and survive in the uncertain business environment. The study…

Journal of Contemporary Issues in Business Research FACTORS INFLUENCING CORPORATE WORKING CAPITAL MANAGEMENT: EVIDENCE FROM AN EMERGING ECONOMY KAMAL NASER1, RANA NUSEIBEH2 and AHMED AL-HADEYA3 ABSTRACT The main purpose of this study is to explore factors that influence working capital management by non-financial companies listed on Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange. The cash conversion cycle is used to proxy working capital management where short cycle implies effective management. Six factors frequently employed in previous research were used to explain variations in cash conversion cycle. The factors included industry type, sales growth, operating cash flows, return on equity, leverage and size. The latest annual reports for all non-financial companies listed on Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange and operate in the UAE were used to achieve the purpose of the study. The result of the analysis revealed that the effectiveness of working capital management of the companies covered in the study are influenced by sales growth, size and the level of corporate leverage. INTRODUCTION Working capital is a financial measure used to assess corporate liquidity. Reasonable working capital should be available to any firm to ensure that it has sufficient funds to cover its short-term obligations and to pay for future operating expenses. This guarantees the continuity of the firm’s operations. In fact, it is possible to see a profitable firm forced out of business due to inability to meet its short- term obligations when they fall due. It is therefore vital for any firm to manage its working capital successfully to ensure continuity. In the last few years, several studies have been undertaken to investigate factors affecting corporate working capital. Most of the studies examined the relationship between corporate working capital and profitability (see for example: Hayajneh and Yassine, 2011; Sabri, 2012; Gill et al., 2010; Dong and Su, 2010; Boisjoly, 2009; Falope and Ajilore, 2009;…

The study of (Shin & Soenen, 1998) consistent with later study on the same objective that done by (Deloof, 2003) by using sample of 1009 large Belgian non-financial firms for the period of 1992-1996. However, (Deloof, 2003) used trade credit policy and inventory policy are measured by number of days accounts receivable, accounts payable and inventories, and the cash conversion cycle as a comprehensive measure of working capital management. He founds a significant negative relation between gross operating income and the number of days accounts receivable, inventories and accounts payable. Thus, he suggests that managers can create value for their shareholders by reducing the number of days accounts receivable and inventories to a reasonable minimum. He also suggests that less profitable firms wait longer to pay their bills.…

Purpose – The object of the research presented in this paper is to provide empirical evidence on the effects of working capital management on the profitability of a sample of small and medium-sized Spanish firms. Design/methodology/approach – The authors have collected a panel of 8,872 small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) covering the period 1996-2002. The authors tested the effects of working capital management on SME profitability using the panel data methodology. Findings – The results, which are robust to the presence of endogeneity, demonstrate that managers can create value by reducing their inventories and the number of days for which their accounts are outstanding. Moreover, shortening the cash conversion cycle also improves the firm’s profitability. Originality/value – This work contributes to the literature in two ways. First, no previous such evidence exists for the case of SMEs. Second, unlike previous studies, in the current work robust test have been conducted for the possible presence of endogeneity problems. The aim is to ensure that the relationships found in the analysis carried out are due to the effects of the cash conversion cycle on corporate profitability and not vice versa. Working capital theory prescribes using the optimal amount of net working capital to maximize shareholder wealth. Evidence from multiple countries indicates a negative relationship between the cash conversion cycle or net working capital and firm profitability. However, severe economic conditions may force firms to change their inventory, accounts receivable, and/or accounts payable policies, causing the firms to use more/less net working capital. Also, it appears firms in general held more net working capital in order to face new economic challenges.…
