Capacity, Process Flow and Bottlenecks - Quinte Mri
Quinte MRI, Inc. is a small international provider specializing in a variety of medical technologies including MRI. Quinte MRI’s founder, Dr. Syed Haider believes that the residents of smaller communities deserve the same level of health services as the residents of the larger urban centers. Quinte MRI is experiencing difficulty in meeting the expectations of 2 scans per hour. As a result, productivity is declining and they losing the referral of many of their colleagues. The process is creating a lot of variability and uncertainties that Quinte MRI are dealing with. Solving the issue of the “bottleneck” will make the operation more effective and manageable. By assuming the role of David Wright and Kevin Saskiw, I will recommend a course of action that should be followed by the new Quinte MRI clinic that will reduce a long waiting list for its imaging services.

Issue Identification

Haider’s client, Benton- Cooper Medical Center (BCMC) has expressed concern over the fact that the MRI clinic was not meeting promises made by Haider and GE to scan patients at a rate of 2 per hour. The hospital’s administrators continue to complain about the MR machine’s low productivity, the strain resulting from the MR technologist’s heavy overtime schedule, and the loss of patient referrals from doctors within the hospital and in the surrounding area. Doctors expect to receive the transcription within 2 days of their request. The backlog has now exceeded 14 days, resulting in providing a poor quality of service to the patients. This backlog has put a strain on the relationship between BCMC and Quinte MRI and has lost referrals to the competing MRI clinics in attempt to obtain a more efficient timeframe for servicing patients. . The MRI clinic is experiencing some problems in the scheduling department. Currently the MRI machine is scheduled for one scan per hour and they are having difficulty reaching that output. It was assumed that the clinic would achieve 2 scans

    There is an overuse of the hospital MRI machine at the facility. The MRI machine needs to be utilized for multiple specialties including emergencies, inpatients, gamma knife, orthopedics, sports medicine. The ultimate recommendation is to add an extremity MRI scanner to the facility to relieve some of the usage of the main MRI machine. Providing this relief benefits in many aspects. The addition will provide an opportunity to expand the sports medicine and orthopedics department. A premier department that is recognized as elite, but this is just one aspect of improvement. Other improvements include the inpatient length of stay. The inpatient length of stay is above benchmarks due in part to the waiting times of the main MRI machine. This increase in length of stay also affects patient satisfaction scores. Physicians have also expressed frustrations due to the waiting times of scans to be done for diagnostic purposes and have opted their office patients to utilize the MRI scans in other departments. Retention of physicians who bring in patients is an important factor to consider in the proposed expenditure. Retention of physicians’ means retention of admissions of whom are sent bu their respective physicians. There is also the potential for liability issues related to the wait times and potential delayed acute diagnosis of medical conditions due to the wait times. This is an opportunity to relieve some of those concerns with an addition of an asset that can benefit the organization. The addition is also aligned with the organizational goals of providing high quality patient care while being the most efficient care provider to its community.…

In the year 2000, a chiropractor was the first to install this particular system for commercial use. There was an improvement in diagnostic and clinical information. Patients were getting faster results and getting a better understanding of their condition. One benefit of digital x-ray has become common in most hospitals and clinics is that it creates a digital picture archive within hospital communication systems allowing doctors to have easy access their patient images. It is designed to replace film in just about any existing X-ray imaging equipment used today and does not require film developers, processing chemicals or storage space. Another benefit is that digital X-ray images can be obtained almost instantly and their resolution, contrast and clarity are at least as good as those of film (Kermode-Scott,2000). Conventional film can take generally 10-15 minutes to process. Its takes up a large amount of time and the processing chemicals can be a bit much to deal with. Digital imaging is also being touted for its ability to capture more information than film. For example, radiologists can view New to Health Care the lungs, heart, bones and a pacemaker from one shot rather than the multiple shots required by conventional radiographs (Kermode-Scott, 2000).
