“Canyons” by Gary Paulsen is a fast-paced adventure that should be read by all action book lovers.
“Canyons” takes place in the hot and dry El Paso, Texas near Mount Franklin and up near the jagged rocks that make up Dog Canyon.
Brennan is a fourteen year old boy that nearly failed biology, runs for fun, works for a cold hearted man, and lives with a mother too poor to take care of him and is desperate for love.
Brennan - Because of the lack of money at home, Brennan works for a man mowing grass, and is used to coming home and seeing his mother with different men. The days slip by and he finally finds himself leading the horses that were stolen away from the Bluebellies and almost gets shot twice. Finally up in the mountains and near his medicine place, Coyote Runs is shot in the leg, and finally in the skull by the Bluebellies so close to his medicine place.
This story is worth putting down any current novel and reading for multiple reasons. First, the story through Brennan’s point of view stops and makes you think about your family. Brennan grows up with a hard family, and it really shows what some people take for granted. Also, the fast-paced storyline never ends. This attribute contributes because you don’t want to stop reading and need to get one more age in. Finally, the way that it’s written through the characters gives you a better detail for understanding the setting. You learn through the characters eyes as you read. This is a short but sweet read that pulls at the heartstrings and makes you rethink how you view
