Campair and Contrast Assay on Studies in Arts and Science
Uday J Vyas
Dr. Colbert Dennis
ENG 106 NLM
20th July 2013. This assay compares and contrasts between two main fields of studies which are Arts stream and Science stream and reflects on similarities and distinguishing features of respective fields of studies. Both of these fields of studies have wide scope of learning through various branches. Arts offers literary arts, more often called literature – including poetry, novels and short stories among others and performing arts which includes music, dance, magic, theatre, films, painting etc. at the same time branches of science are commonly divided into three major groups first Social science which study human behavior and society, second is Natural science which deals with fundamental forces and biological life and third is Formal science which includes mathematics and logic. Both these fields of studies involve Research, observation and systemic inquiry in driving forces of human life. They are inspired by human life and give it meaning and comfort for example Arts thrive to search for meaning, truth and knowledge of human life and its dynamic nature to make culture, society and community in which human lives. And science through creating technical resources such as computer, transportation devices, and medical equipments makes it easier to live. Both of these fields involve critical thinking and originality of work for validity and reliability of it, which contributes in knowledge data base of human race about the world within them and outside of them. Both of these branches are searching and explaining the “cause and effect” relationship at some or other point of it existence. Apart from similarities, there are number of differences in both of these fields of studies like arts is abstract field as it involves more of imagination and free flow of thoughts in contrast of science in which there is concrete facts and stream line of thoughts which must correlate in one or other form with each other . one can be able to see, touch or feel the phenomena of study for example work of poet or author is purely fictional from their or somebody else’s experience which can defer in similar cases experience which Barbara Kingsolver had can be different than many other authors, on other hand in work of science which is tangible work can be seen in similar controlled condition for many times for example law of energy transformation or gravity or Newton are universal and can be repeated for similar results everywhere. Nature of science study is very rigid and requires controlled condition, but there is only one understanding of its principles in contrast Arts is dynamic field of study where topic and their interpretation changes as per situation, time & person and one can yield different meaning from same work of Arts. Science involves high level of perfection where individual thinking doesn’t have place, principles are so factual that everyone have to accept them the way they are, whereas in Arts intellectual thinking is key of work. Author doesn’t need to be perfect on what they are writing it can be on mistakes that they have done in life. And reader may not agree with what author said. Work of Arts is based on Intuitions on other hand technique is required for work of science this is one other distinguishing factor of between both fields of studies. In arts whether it is painting, fictional writing or music among others it requires intuition of artist, his imagination and creativity it has nothing to do with technique whereas science is all about technique, method and factors controlling it. There can be only one way to get certain result any deviation from proper technique will not give desired effect. That’s how it limits scope of creativity in work. On top of that science requires extensive expertise, laboratories, monetary support to practice it and advanced technical machinery in contrast arts can be practiced in small scale as it is not demanding other than dedication of practitioner . Arts is expression of one’s self and society and science is explanation and understanding of nature, there are different ways of illustration in Arts for example a thought is expressed in form of music, making a story out if, may be a poem from it among others but in science there is only a single way of its expression and that is through experiment. Utility of science doesn’t require people to understand it as they are universally applicable which makes it use very common not depending upon its working knowledge for example law of gravity but to utilize knowledge of Arts one must have to be familiar with it which limits its scope of utility. Science work is repetitive in nature whereas Art work is not repetitive even by original creator of it.

A scientist and an artist differ in respect as in what way they perceive the world. The science deals with the existing world. It neither takes nor adds anything to it. Whereas, the concern of an artist is the world in one of its realisations, the way the artist wants to see it. From my perspective, the natural sciences are an area of knowledge independent of culture. In order to reach this conclusion, I examined the scientific method. The scientific method is a method used to distinguish a science from a pseudo science ( fake science). According to the traditional picture of the scientific method, science is divided into 5 steps known as inductivism.…
