Calyx Flowers
Calyx Flowers case analysis

Calyx Flowers is relatively new company (under new management) in the fresh flowers market. They have pioneered the concept of selling fresh flowers by mail. During the years they established a strong relationship with Federal Express, their primary distributor.

The main issue:
How to increase the financial performance of Calyx Flowers through marketing and thus enlarging customer base and adding more segments.
Existing way of reaching customers through a catalogue is not efficient in finding new customers and has a low response rate.

The main competitors:

• 1-800-Flowers.com – a large flower distributor in US, which uses mainly mass media for its advertisement.

• FTD – the largest flower company in the world. Uses mainly toll-free # & online website.

• Supermarkets – offer lower prices but not the same variety. Not as fresh as flowers by mail.

Pros & Cons of the Alternatives:

1. Attract new customers by increasing catalog mailings to potential buyers by 3mm. Pros: Expand size of potential customer base; Increase brand awareness; Provides more information for profile-based segmentation. Cons: Added cost (rental fee for the mailing list) involved; new people who receive catalogs might have aversion to the company acquiring their names and personal information; Yields only 1% return.

2. Advertise more aggressively using traditional mass media (radio, TV).

Pros: Able to reach broader audience and create brand awareness; Previous success launching other brands; Allows for partial segmentation by choosing specific channels. Cons: Higher costs than option #1 or #3; Difficult to target specific market segment; Cannot gauge effectiveness of their target audience receiving message; Cannot assess target segment’s reaction.

3. Advertise more aggressively on the Internet.

A major disadvantage of this strategy is that by not obtaining personal information about their customers they are forfeiting their ability to send coupons and ad information about special discounts that may be of interest to their existing customers that could potentially encourage them to purchase items. They are also giving up the ability to track customer purchases to create a costumer profiles that would allow advertising targeted specifically for particular customer needs and interests.…

The main benefits and opportunities of using the above are as follows. When you have a customer’s information you can work out what they might like. With this information you can send them relevant product information and special offers instead of sending everyone the same e-mails which they might get sick of and completely disregard or even choose a different business. Using the information correctly will build a relationship with the customer which in turn will build customer loyalty which is a very important benefit considering the amount of competition. Amazon is good example of a business using customer information correctly and individualisation for customer relations. They build relationships with customers by monitoring and collecting a customer’s purchase history and sending out personalised advertisements via e-mail, social media and as soon as a customer logs in tin the website. This makes it more personal.…

Like any other son or daughter, one may think that flowers are used as a token of appreciation on a day where all mothers around the world are celebrated for all of their efforts to raise us. Yet, the question of where and how the flowers are harvested and issued to consumers never comes up. Many serious labor and environmental problems have been associated with the floriculture especially south of the border in the Latin American countries where most of our flowers derive from through a tariff-free ship to the United States. Health hazards are the bare minimum that is suffered by this floriculture society as a result of the pesticide/fertilizer runoff into fragile water resources in the community and the chemicals that are used to preserve the flowers are exposed to the women who work with them on a daily basis. As a result, social change for the floriculture is…

    Chrysanthemums

At the beginning of the story, Steinbeck introduces the setting by describing it as “cold and tender” with “no sunshine in the valley” (1). Not only does this description present an overall dreary mood, it represents Elisa’s hiddenness. With a “lid of fog” that covers her true talents and what she could bring to society. First, the chrysanthemums symbolize Elisa's children. She tends her garden and handles the chrysanthemums with love and care, just as she would handle her own children. Elisa is very protective of her flowers and places a wire fence around them; she makes sure "no aphids, no sowbugs or snails or cutworms" are there. "Her terrier fingers [destroy] such pests before they [can] get started" (240). These pests represent natural harm to the flowers, and, just as any good mother, she removes them before they can harm her children. The chrysanthemums are symbolic of her children, and she is very proud of them. When Elisa's husband compliments her on her flowers, she is proud, and "on her face there [is] a little smugness"(240). She is happy and…

“Elisa’s eyes grew alert and eager.” (The Chrysanthemums, 353). This helps to show the reader how excited Elisa was about the flowers. She was very excited to share what she has come to learn about the chrysanthemums. She was filled with enormous pride especially to notice others take notice of her good work. Aside from the many symbolic connections and references within the story, Elisa’s sense of pride about the chrysanthemums was very intriguing. “I raise them every year, bigger than anybody around here.” (The Chrysanthemums, 352). Just like the chrysanthemums were something adored by others and very rare for others to grow; they brought about a sense of pride to Elisa to know that she was able to have that extraordinary gift to grow such a beautiful flower.…

    2. Increasing Mass media Advertising, allows Calyx Flowers to tap into the market share of the other leading Floral Companies like FTD which primarily does Mass Media Advertising to advertise its products . Since Calyx flowers ships flowers to the customer directly from the grower, the customer can be rest assured that the flowers shipped from the Calyx warehouse appear to be the same as the flowers displayed on Calyx’s website, unlike FTD which cannot guarantee the flowers delivered to the recipient are the same as they appear on the floral magazine, since orders through FTD are forwarded to different florists depending on the recipient’s location. This tactic of “predictability” would be attractive to FTD customers who would want to switch to Calyx Flowers.…

The Chrysanthemums themselves are a symbol of both Elisa and her life. Like the flower, Elisa is beautiful and powerful and as described in the story, her face is “lean and strong and her eyes were as clear as water” (Steinbeck 726). Elisa feels comfortable when around the flowers and feels a connection with them. Her sudden change from when the man in the wagon asks about the Chrysanthemums is an evidence of her appreciation and identification to the flowers, “The irritation and resistance melted from Elisa’s face.” (Steinbeck 729). At that moment she felt appreciated and important. Her bond to the flowers is so strong that when he compliments them, she feels as if he had complimented her as well. Also, at the same time as she is offering the Chrysanthemums to him, she is also offering herself, exemplifying her and the flowers unity once again as well as the symbolic meaning of her offering of the flowers. The amount of detail she gives when talking about the stars is “nearly pornographic” (SparkNotes). At the end of the story, as she sees the flowers on the floor, realizing his rejection to the flowers, she instantaneously feels rejected as well and starts “crying weakly-like an old woman” (Steinbeck…
