Call of the Wild - Final Essay Throughout the story, Buck changes a lot. His specific traits develop significantly as it progresses further and further, some more than others. One trait in particular that seems to progress the most throughout the story, is how violent he is. Through his many experiences, from new owners to vicious dogs, Buck learns that he will have to change some of his behavioral tactics if he wants to survive this journey. Much of his changing deals with how well he communicates and gets along with the other dogs on the team. In the beginning, Buck lives in comfort with his owner. He was usually quite docile, and liked to simply live in his comfort forever. While he was taking a walk, he was taken by some men, and he eventually comes face to face with a man in a red sweater. At this point, he just despises the fact that they are trying to tame him, and becomes angered, and tries to fight back. This shows one of the many ways his behavior changes; he was always a calm and collected dog, but as his situation changes, so does his behavior. When the man brandishes a club and proceeds to beat him with every one of his futile attempts to fight back, Buck learns also that he must change his behavior according to his situation. As he changes owners, Buck also keeps changing the way he acts and gets along with the other dogs. Spitz was the lead dog, and treacherous at that. Buck saw him as a rival that always beat him in everything. Eventually Buck toughens up and confronts Spitz to fight him. In the end he won, and in doing so had killed Spitz. Afterwards, he didn’t even feel the slightest bit of remorse for his actions. This shows another way he changes his behavior. With his different owners, between François, and then the three inexperienced musketeers, Buck constantly grows more and more violent.
