Topic: Positive and Negative Effects of Caffeine

General Purpose: To Inform

Specific Purpose: By the end of my speech, my audience will be better informed of the many positive and negative effects on the human body when drinking an energy drink.

I. Introduction

A. Attention Grabber: It’s 2a.m and you haven’t even started on the communications assignment due in a couple of hours. You’re sleepy and tired because you just got out of a 12-hour shift over at work. What’s going to give you the energy to stay up and complete this assignment? The most obvious answer, an energy drink. But do you really know what happens inside your body after consuming one of these drinks?

B. Caffeine is the number one used drug in the world.
1. In the US, the number one users of the drug are young adults. Typically between the ages of 18 and 40 years old.

2. The most preferred type is coffee or energy drinks.

Transition: Now that I talked about what is caffeine; I will know discuss the positive effects of it.

III. Positive outcomes of caffeine. Why consume it?

A. You become more alert.

1. Tends to make you feel less worn out and more attentive.

2. This is why a lot of people drink coffee in the morning, to get them ready for the day.

B. It can be of a comfort.

1. Drinking a cup a coffee can relieve a headache.

2. May reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and even suicide.

Transition: Now that we have learned some of the positives, its time to learn of the negatives.

IV. Negatives effects of caffeine.

A. Taking a fair amount daily is safe, it’s when you start exceeding your bodies limits is when it starts hurting you.

1. It raises your blood pressure, which can be bad if you’re on medications or have a medical condition.

2. You have 3 times the risk of having a heart attack if you consume a moderate amount of
