Congressman John Conyers first introduced legislation for a commemorative holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. four days after his assassination in 1968. The bill stalled and endorsement petitions containing millions of signatures were submitted to Congress. In 1973, Illinois adopted Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Day as a state holiday.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA). The military-based VITA program provides no-cost tax advice, preparation, return filing, and other tax assistance to military members and their families. The Armed Forces Tax Council, consisting of tax program coordinators from all military branches, oversees the operation of military tax programs and serves as the main Internal Revenue Service outreach to military personnel and families. All servicemembers and their dependents may receive tax preparation assistance at offices on bases and installations. Specifically trained VITA specialists can address military issues such as combat-zone tax benefits and the effect of the new Earned Income Tax Credit guidelines.
