Case: Anglo American PLC in South Africa (from Lesson 5)
1. Who are the various stakeholders that Anglo American needs to consider as it adopts an effective HIV/AIDs strategy?
In order to effectively adopt Anglo American’s HIV/AIDs strategy, they will need to first consider its employees and their families. Primary stakeholders also involve government bodies, pharmaceutical companies, and financial institutions. Non-profit organizations (NGOs) such as World Health Organization (WHO) will also play a key role in deploying the strategy. Furthermore, Anglo American will need to consider what its competitors are doing as well as the responses from the general community. Lastly, shareholders’ point of view should be taken into consideration as they provide financial support for Anglo American’s success.
2. What are the pros and cons of Anglo American’s adoption of an aggressive strategy in combating HIV/AIDS among its South African workforce? What recommendations would you give the company concerning its HIV/AIDS policy?
Pros:
Gain trust from the community by tackling one of the major issues the South African workforce is facing
Attract ethical minded shareholders for future investment
Improve productivity and prevent further operating loss as it is cost effective to have a program in place to increase wellness in the workforce
Opportunity to work with the government on national strategic plan to combat HIV/AIDS hence build good relationship with the government body
Become a memorable company who led by example in South Africa
Influence other companies to act responsibly and support the community
Cons:
Initial criticism from the government and the union
Difficulty and complication that comes with successfully implementing the program
Bad working conditions weakened the medication effect
Unforeseen situation such as additional unsafe sexual practices
Recommendations:
Seek cooperation from the government and support from local organizations to ensure better
