Byronic Hero – Romantic Hero – Tragic Hero – Anti-Hero
During the Romantic Era, a hybrid of the Romantic Hero evolved out of the writings of Lord Byron and the combination tragic hero/romantic hero/anti hero characterization of many of the protagonists in Gothic Novels. Frankenstein is considered one of the Gothic Novels that developed out the the Romantic Era. The “heroes” in Frankenstein could fit into the Byronic Hero category or be classified as Romantic, Tragic, or Anti Heroes. Lady Caroline Lamb, a former lover of Lord Byron’s called him “mad, bad, and dangerous to know.” This epitaph stuck as a way to describe a Byronic Hero in literature as well. See if Victor Frankenstein fits the description of the Byronic Hero or if he embodies more of the traits of the other heroes. What about Captain Walton and the Monster?
Characteristics of The Byronic Hero: • high level of intelligence and perception • cunning and able to adapt • sophisticated and educated • self-critical and introspective • mysterious, magnetic and charismatic • struggling with integrity • power of seduction and sexual attraction • social and sexual dominance • emotional conflicts, bipolar tendencies, or moodiness • a distaste for social institutions and norms • being an exile, an outcast, or an outlaw • "dark" attributes not normally associated with a hero • disrespect of rank and privilege • a troubled past • cynicism • arrogance • self-destructive behavior
Characteristics of The Romantic Hero: • Birth and class are unimportant: the individual transcends society • The battle is internal: it is a psychological war won by the “courage to be me” • Moral codes are eccentric–heroes make their own rules • Passions are outside of individual control • Self knowledge is valued more than physical strength or endurance (physical courage is de-valued) • The hero is moody, isolated, and

    Through the characterization of Walton, the narrator, and Victor, Shelley’s Frankenstein depicts the passions fuelled by desire for renown, that drive people to discover, reflecting contextual concerns over scientific irresponsibility. In 1818, there was excitement about both geographical and scientific discovery, with Walton symbolising the former and Frankenstein the latter. Walton’s “great purpose” of discovering a northern passage to facilitate trade parallels Victor’s desire to, “banish disease…and render man invulnerable”. Ironically, despite their voiced altruism, neither are responsible. Imagery depicts Walton endangering his entire crew with his ship trapped in, “irregular plains of ice…no end”.     In Stephen Garrett’s article, Why We Love TV’s Anti-Heroes, he shows how the heros of today are different from those of the past because they have changed with the world. The focus has shifted from the flat out hero, to a hero that has everyday issues like everyone else, making the character easier to identify with. Our culture today is enthralled with the anti-hero because the character is realistic to people in our society now, rather than someone who is held up on a pedestal for being perfect. Instead of the typical “superman” like plot where the pure hero has to be something other than human to be that perfect, Stephen Garrett offers the idea of the anti-hero being so popular because it resembles the average person who has struggles and does the right thing.     Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, deals with two very distinct individuals: the young-but-foolish Victor Frankenstein and his creation, the “Monster”. Victor is the main focus of the novel for the beginning chapters, while the rest of the work focuses more on the development and actions of the Monster. The characters of Victor and the Monster are first brought together during the Monster’s creation in Chapter 4 (34). It was Victor’s isolation from both his family and his peers that ultimately lead to his creation of the Monster, and it was the Monster’s feelings of isolation and resentment towards Victor that lead to his violent episodes. While these feelings are evident in both characters’ actions throughout the majority of the novel, it was during the Monster’s statements to Captain Robert Walton towards the end of the story that drives home the fact that the Monster’s actions were products of his repeated rejections when he attempted to be accepted by society and as such are not indicative of his inherent nature. It was these feelings of loneliness and resentment that drove both Victor and the Monster to their actions, and it is safe to assume that some of Shelley’s personal feelings of abandonment and resentment towards her mother bled through into her characters. These feelings are made evident by way of the diction of the characters, both elements of and deviations from the Gothic stereotype, the development of the characters throughout the story and the lack of any definite closure to the text.…

    The monster continually calls out for sensibility from the romantic. The monster has a desire for companionship, and implores of his creator to make him a being of his own species. The monster also desires to be accepted by mankind. The final way the monster displays sensibility is through his desire to learn. He displays his capabilities of learning at the beginning of his creation, and continues to grow throughout the novel. Victor Frankenstein shows the individualistic, mystic, and love of nature side of romanticism. He displays individualism through his desire to be his own creator. He also rejects the help from others, and strives on selfish ambition. Victor shows the mysticism, through gaining power of being his own god. Finally, he shows a love for nature, through taking the time to breathe and admire the beautiful countryside around him. Romanticism is concluded in the comparison of the two characters, and how similar their situations are. Victor Frankenstein and the monster both have a strong desire for love from others around them. They also show great passion for sympathy from others, which they do not necessarily receive. Their situations are unrealistic, and portray the case of non-neoclassicism. Both Frankenstein and the monster experience deep sorrow throughout the entire novel. This experience is heightened when the monster is denied a companion and Victor loses all of his loved ones. In the end, both Victor and the creature share their desire for friendship, which neither fully obtain, due to the circumstances of the rejection and bitterness.
