By The Waters Of Babylon
(Paragraph 2) By the Waters of Babylon is about a son of a priest &

becoming priest by the name of John who goes on a quest to find himself & show he is

worthy to become a priest. Just as in the movie “The Village” there are forbidden places

enter into. It’s forbidden to go to any of the dead places except to search for metal & he

who touches the metal must be a priest or son of a priest or they will die. John’s father

takes him on a journey to search for metal & it is only after John touches the metal does

his father see that John is “truly his son and would be a priest.” As the time comes for

John to become a priest, he has to undergo a “purification” rite. John’s father tells him to

look into the fire and to say what he sees in his dreams. John sees a river, and, beyond

it, a great Dead Place and in it the gods walking. His father calls this a “strong dream”

that “may eat you up.” He then makes his son promise not to travel to the east and

cross the great river to visit the Place of the Gods for these places are forbidden to

enter. His father sends him off on a spiritual journey, but does not know he is going to

the forbidden places of the Gods. As John prays & fasts he takes a journey through the

forest for eight days, and crosses the forbidden river Ou]-dis-sun. He crosses it & does

not die. Once John gets to the Place of the Gods, he steps on the ground & he does not

burn. Instead he only feels energy and magic. As he travels through the place of the

Gods in search of food he sees a statue of what seems to be a “God” that

says "ASHING" on its base. While being chased by dogs and finds a building with

stories he climbs to get away from becoming food. John explores what seems to be an

apartment he see pictures, sculptures & things he has never known of. As he continues

looking around he comes upon what he thinks is a dead God. Upon viewing the visage,

he has an epiphany that the

The significance of the quote made by John's father could be broken down in to three different sections according to each statement. What caused an 85 ton Sperm whale to crash into the side of the Essex, causing one of the most disastrous and tragic accidents in maritime history? Was this a calculated attack? Did it see the whaling ship as an unwanted rival in its territory? Did the crew of the Essex have anything to do with the whales' sporadic behavior? Or was this simply an unexplainable act of nature's unpredictability?…

As John becomes a man, he sets himself apart - knowing his purpose and preparing himself for his future in ministry. He does this by spending many, many years in the wilderness, being raised and prepared to make the highway for the gospel. He wore a cloak of fur, and ate a diet of Locust and honey (Jackson, 1). As the coming age of the Messiah's ministry was near, John emerged from his wilderness ways.…

Following a faint sound he cannot identify, he comes to a section of the tunnel that is taller and has fresher air. He gropes along, using a pole to test the depth of the water in front of him and occasionally lights a match for a brief bit of light. He finds a dirt cave off to one side, and then comes to a brick wall, through which he can plainly hear a group of people singing Christian hymns. Pulling himself up on some old pipes near the ceiling, he can see through a crevice that black people in white robes are holding a church service. It seems to him that what they are doing is wrong, that asking for forgiveness is obscene.…

When he decided it was time to leave and explore, he significantly brought the end of humanity closer to themselves. In the short story “By the Waters of Babylon” by Stephen Vincent Benet the author uses structure to impact the readers understanding of truth by using the literary device Foreshadowing and another literary device situation Irony. “It is forbidden to cross the Great river and look upon the place that was the place of the gods-This is the most strictly forbidden”. The author gives hints along the story that changes the readers perspective from what seems a long lost broken down civilization full of rituals from ancient time to an understanding that it’s based on the future after an event called “...The Great Burning” occurred. The author creates an impact on the reader by engaging the person on a mindset of an understanding that completely is turned around.…

In order to understand the ramifications of an event such as the sinking of the Essex one needs too understand the community that produces the crew. Nantucket was an island community much more than the literal sense of word. The islanders of Nantucket saw themselves differently than the rest of the word. They learned the skills of whaling from the original Wampanoag tribe. They were Quakers with a stoic sense of standards and community. The whale men from Nantucket saw themselves as superior to most other sailors of that time period. Hardship and perseverance were virtues held by the whale men and the women. The women ran the town while the whale men were at sea for years at a time. This type of work ethic and fortitude, and the worlds desire for oil, combined to make “the village of Nantucket one of the richest towns in America.” “In the Heart of the Sea” It also created a close-knit community with a few very successful and influential families that married with each other maintaining a strong central hierarchy.…
