s Mike McCarty walked through the Silver Ships shipyard monitoring the production of several aluminum hull boats in various stages of production, he began to think “What now?” He had seen his shipyard grow from a boatbuilding operation in the garage of his home in 1985 to a large, state-of-the-art company manufacturing 26- to 60-foot aluminumhull boats in 2010. During its 25 years in business, McCarty’s company had sold more than 1,500 boats to the U.S. military, various federal agencies, law enforcement agencies, shipping companies, and others needing custom-designed small to medium-size vessels. Exhibit 1 presents a sample of typical military and workboats produced by Silver Ships. McCarty built his business by focusing on the highest possible quality and performance and taking care of his employees. His commitment to quality had allowed the company to increase revenues from $5.7 million in 2006 to nearly $11 million in 2009. In addition, the company had a strong balance sheet and had never been forced to lay off a single employee in its 25-year history. An income statement for 2006 through 2009 is presented in Exhibit 2. The company’s balance sheets for 2006 through 2009 are presented in Exhibit 3. As 2011 approached, McCarty was at an age where he could consider retirement and begin shopping the business to potential buyers or continue to drive Silver Ships’ growth through various expansion opportunities. The…

Our analysis of the proposal for the construction of a new 180,000 DWT vessel has brought us to the conclusion that the project should not be undertaken. Our recommendation and decision is based on a discounted cash flow analysis of expected future cash flows from the vessel that produced a net loss for the project of $7,201,639. Included in this recommendation are a number of important assumptions, each of which is described in detail below, that we believe are neither conservative nor aggressive in nature. A sensitivity analysis of major assumptions in our analysis is included on the final page of this memo. In each viable case, we arrived at the same conclusion to not undertake this project.…

Compass Maritime is facing a difficult decision regarding how to price the Bet Performer. There are many factors that must be included in the final decision, including the age of the ship, its deadweight ton capacity, the original shipbuilder, as well as the mechanicals underpinning this particular ship. The type and build of the ship is only one issue facing Compass Marine. Another issue faced is determining what qualifies as a comparable ship, and what qualifies as a ‘recent’ transaction. According to the data presented, there have been forty-eight ships sold in the previous seventeen months. Although this appears to be a substantial amount of transactions from which to procure data, the recent surge in the Baltic Dry Index for Bulk Carriers and the associated surge for capesize ships demands attention and should be factored into the analysis as well. Also the data provides only a small portion of specifics relating to the comparable ships. Factors such as confirmed time charter contracts, location of the ship, loading equipment, and other specifics which could affect the prices of these ships has been left out.…
