Business Leader Interview Report
To fulfill the requirements of the business leader assignment, I interviewed Mr. Matt Onofrio¬¬ (Co-owner, President and COO) of GT Midwest (GT). As a mid-size distributor, GT provides industrial supplies and fabricated parts to customers in such industries as aerospace, agriculture, and transportation. Through this interview experience, I gained an understanding of an employee-owned company structure, learned how a mid-size distributor competes in a commodity based business, and realized why Mr. Onofrio is a successful business leader. My understanding of an employee-owned company structure increased significantly. I had a misconception that an employee-owned company meant ownership by all employees; GT’s ownership is closely held by Mr. …show more content…
Onofrio is a successful business leader. First, the attribute of humility was present. Without hesitancy, he talked about opportunities to improve his skills and how he leverages his mentor (father) and peer groups. He admitted making mistakes such as losing business by not being on the front-end of the technology. He readily gave credit to GT’s employees specifically mentioning the impact of taking cost out of a customer’s process¬ “decreasing the run-time from one hour to six minutes, huge benefit, the 54 minutes is way more beneficial than the cost of the bit.” Basically, he was illustrating to me how this sales person created long-term value by gaining a loyal customer. how rewarding it was to hear indirectly the impact¬¬ who innovated. Secondly, I connected the passion he exhibits and instills in his employees to create value for GT customers to the way he conducted the interview. He took the time to explain the concepts within his answers and asked if I was receiving the information that was helpful for the interview. He wanted to create value for me; not just give answers to an …show more content…
Onofrio. Specifically, the real-world examples he provided will help me to connect to concepts being discussed in class. He gave advice on the practicality of an accounting major or area of focus “accounting is the language of business...numbers are the score.” He was very upfront about the importance of a company’s culture. I wished I would have inquired about how to get a perspective of a company’s culture during a short employment interview process. Mr. Onofrio was complementary of my research on his company; thus, I will continue to do this prior to meeting with company representatives as it provides a connection point. Lastly, this interview process is great for learning about different businesses and will help me with determining whether it is a career path I want to

Consultant & Advisor has introduced me *******, their top management consultant, to look over the case of Catherine Follis of Dunston Vierra Ltd, and what I’ve discovered to be the main issue in this case is Ms. Follis’ new born baby being brought to her place of work. I have also learned of the various other factors in the situation, including the office space Ms. Follis is willing to renovate and pay rent for, the majority of female employees this company has in that division, as well as the valuable clients of Ms. Follis that need to be accounted for. The apparent problems of this ordeal consist of; the amount of time Ms. Follis would need to take out of her schedule to prepare the nursery, the physical distractions towards the other employees, and the constant running back and forth of Ms. Follis to nurse her child distracting her from her work or possibly leaving a meeting. From what I’ve covered thus far, the main problem seems to be the sheer amount of time Catherine and her fellow employees would spend with the child. Thus wasting valuable time and essentially costing more money to keep Catherine than to have her stay on maternity leave.…

I recently had the honor of interviewing someone in our community who has had more than thirty years of leadership experience in our community. The interview ended up taking much longer than I expected because I was so influenced by what he had to say, I did not want to miss anything. Mr. Kevin Henderson started his career as a cook back in the 60's for the Jolly Ox (Steak & Ale) restaurant. His leadership abilities were quickly realized, and he was promoted to Store manager. From there he moved on to the Shoney's Restaurant Corporation where he remained for twenty five years serving as a regional supervisor, and finally working his way up to the President of the Steak House Division of Shoney's. This consisted…

For my interview I decided to pick the owner of the company I work for. The owner’s name is J. Kent McNew and he is the owner of Eastern Petroleum Corporation. The company is a petroleum distributor of gasoline primarily through gas station outlets. Eastern Petroleum Corporation is a Maryland corporation and its corporate office is located in Annapolis, MD. Mr. McNew sells products in MD, VA, DC, and some in DE. The scope of the business is done in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United States. Eastern Petroleum is an S-Chapter corporation, which means S Corporations do not pay any income taxes. Instead, the corporation 's income or losses are divided among and passed through to its shareholders. The shareholders must then report the income or loss on their own individual income tax returns. Mr. Kent said that he’s always had an entrepreneur spirit and it started way back when he was in grade school. He stated in his school each class had to sell garden seeds and he always sold the most in his class, so that inspired him to go into business. He worked for Hess Oil Company while attending the University of Richmond, realizing while selling products to his customers he wanted to go into business for himself. So he started the company called “Eastern Petroleum Corporation”. To come up with the corporation’s name he sat down with a legal pad and just wrote down different names that came to mind. He didn’t want to name the company after himself because his father had a company called the McNew Brothers, and since he was based on the East coast he came up with Eastern Petroleum Corporation. Mr. McNew also came up with a company color which is yellow, because he wanted everyone to see the gasoline trucks on the road and he knew yellow would draw people’s attention. While talking with Mr. Kent he stated some of the advantages of being a corporation compared to…

During October 2010 Tony Hsieh toured 10 cities in the US promoting his book Delivering Happiness with nine other members of Zappos.com, Directly out of college he helped co-found the company, Link Exchange which 2 ½ years later sold to Microsoft. The reason being was that the company culture was gone. The company first started out with 20 employees that were hired thru friends of friends. When it grew to 100 employees their passion and vision were invisible. Tony sold to Microsoft and tried the investment market, but to Tony it was too boring. He is more of a constructive type person. While investing he come about Zappos and found it to be very interesting. At first Zappos just sold shoes then branched out into other clothing apparel. Hsieh took Zappos from zero sales in the 99 to over a billion in sales in 2009. He and Zappos implemented a two stage hiring process, one for skills, experience, qualifications and so on. The other hiring interview focused on culture fit as far as what the employees feel about their work. Tony Hsieh and Zappos developed committable Core Values for the employees to follow. There were ten, but the most important he said was #10 that said “Be Humble” because most employees that were very intellectual, experienced and qualified were very egotistical which didn’t fit in to their culture. He stated how all the core values were very important to Zappos because it kept everyone on the same page when it came to how to treat the customer or make sure to have fun and be happy with yourself…
