Business Ethics: Journal Analysis
Journal Entry #3 Today we discussed issues concerning ethics such as egoism/altruism and applied ethics such as the pros/cons of abortion and euthanasia. First, the professor got the class to analyze 3 real life situations and asked students to determine whether they were considered acts of altruism or egoism. The first example were the job duties of firefighters. Some students said firefighters help others unconditionally and put their lives at risk everyday and is therefore considered to be an altruistic career. Others disagreed and said that a firefighter job duty is not considered an act of altruism because their motivation for helping the community is the pay and the honor they receive. I believe for an act to be considered altruistic

Egoism is the act of behaving self-interestedly, and is perceived as a negative trait even though it can be seen as a tool of survival (Rosenstand, 2003: 131). However, there is an opposing theory, which is altruism. Altruism is defined as a concern for the welfare of others and is considered virtuous (Rosenstand, 2003: 150). Nonetheless, one notices how altruist acts usually include rewards, even if it’s just a simple thank you. This leads to questions such as, does true altruism exist, or do people always have a motive as to why they perform altruistically?…

Webster’s Dictionary defines ethics as “a set of moral principles: a theory or system of moral values.” (Merriam-Webster, Incorporated, 2011). Every person has ethics that he or she lives by, but sometimes in the business world many unethical business transactions occur. People do not realize that sometimes the statistics that he or she are fed have been falsified in order to get him or her to purchase a product or lure him or her in to participate in via false promises.…

    1. The Sales Rep. A sales representative for a struggling computer supply firm has a chance to close a multimillion-dollar deal for an office system to be installed over a two-year period. The machines for the first delivery are in the company’s warehouse, but the remainder would have to be ordered from the manufacturer. Because the manufacturer is having difficulty meeting the heavy demand for the popular model, the sales representative is not sure that the subsequent deliveries can be made on time. Any delay in converting to the new system would be costly to the customer; however, the blame could be placed on the manufacturer. Should the sales representative close the deal without advising the customer about the problem?…
