Abstract

Many commercial products developed allow those with disabilities to substantially improve their quality of life. The use of these devices allows the user to experience the freedom of certain aspects of life such as mobility, communication and other fundamental tasks. Examples of such solutions include cochlear implants, prosthetic limbs and text-to-speech devices. The BEACON follows in this same spirit, by providing visually impaired persons (VIPs) the freedom to independently commute via public bus transportation.

Through the use of BEACON transmitters placed on local buses, VIPs are able to safely catch buses with the aid of a portable handheld device and an audio and tactile interface. The wireless communication system between the transmitter and the portable receiver can be achieved through a number of current technologies. With more exotic approaches like Bluetooth still maturing in terms of financial and performance viability, the cheaper and more ubiquitous approach of radio frequency technology points towards a more feasible solution that can be produced at a reasonable cost for either the direct purchase by VIPs or a government subsidised initiative.

With the aid of the current bus transportation system, the BEACON transmitter is able to

The current x-ray machine flat value would be $12,000 each. Each day the hospital uses the current machines to make 8.5 x-rays per day. The average revenue for each x-ray is $65.00. The hospital calculates the revenue of the machines by multiplying the number of x-rays by the revenue ($65.00 x 8.5 = $553 per day). Looking at the total revenue for the year, $553 per day x 365, the hospital sees revenue of $201845 per year.…

Earlier mentioned various routing protocols that we have discovered while carrying out this phase, and noted various studies that have been carried out assessing these protocols [23] [24][25]. Among the large number only very few that meet up the requirements to become a VANET protocol such as the protocol being rapid and light weighted. It is now required to select the best that fits our requirement of the project goal.…

Vehicle Management System is usually an integration of global positioning system (GPS), geographic information system (GIS), mobile communication system and Internet technology, providing users with valuable, real-time information. If a vehicle is equipped with GPS, important information such as current location, speed, direction, vehicle condition, etc. will be sent back to the control center. The manager is able to know oil consumption, personnel attendance, goods delivery, and anomalous state of the vehicle, and to make right decision to enhance performance. In general, a vehicle management information system provides the following functions:…

The growing number of work zones on US roadways demandsthe need for a traffic information system to warn the drivers of timely updates on travel time and congestion lengths. Dedicated short range communication (DSRC) is considered a key enabling wireless communication technology to realize such automated traffic information systems. We have previously developed a work zone information system using DSRC based V2I communication in conjunction with V2V communication. Our previously developedsystem, uses a roadside DSRC unit which acts as central control to facilitate the acquisition and dissemination of work zone travel parameters e.g., travel time (TT) and starting location of congestion (SLoC). However, the successful operation of this system depends upon reliable functionality of the roadside DSRC unit working as the central control. To improve system reliability and ease of deployment, we now propose to develop a work zone travel information system using V2V communication only, without needing any DSRC based roadside unit. In the proposed system, acquisition of TT and SLoC will be performed strictly using only DSRC based V2V communication. Furthermore, the dissemination of the acquired parameters will also be done using DSRC based V2V communication to both DSRC equipped vehicles and DSRC equipped PCMSs which are strategically placed alongside the road. DSRC equipped PCMSs will be able to receive these parameters from nearby DSRC equipped vehicles on the road via DSRC based V2V communication, and display them for the drivers of those vehicles lacking DSRC capability.Additionally, a rigorous analysis will be performed to investigate the minimum DSRC market penetration rate needed for successful functionality of the proposed system with respect to both acquisition and dissemination of TT and…
