The Bigger Picture

Assignment 1

Word Count: 1519

I am writing this report to help company XYZ understand the “bigger picture” of occupational health and safety legislation and help them understand its better business working safely and injury free than having workers injured and off work coasting the company money due to down time and fines.
I will discuss briefly on how the law works and your best defense if you are found guilty. I will also talk about the concerns the inspector had and how we can correct them. But the main reason I am writing this report is so the workers can work safely and go home at the end of the day injury free.

Because we have these controlled products in our work place we must implement a system of communication called Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). This is law and just plain smart to protect our workers. The WHMIS system gives the worker information on the exact identity of the hazardous material they are working with, how it might affect their health, the way to protect them against the material, what to do in case of an emergency involving the substance and what first aid measures needed if in contact with it.
For WHMIS to work you need to educate and train your workers to the WHMIS system, you need to label all the controlled products used in your workplace and provide the workers with material safety data sheets on those controlled products. The controlled products that we have in our plant are defined from the Controlled Products Regulation and WHMIS is regulated and enforced by our provincial or territorial occupational health and safety

We need to make sure to eliminate disadvanges to the worker, future workers or the clients. We must build accommodations into our policies and procedures for the workers to prevent hardship. The administrator agency is the human rights commission at a provincial level.
We must also keep the workers personal information protected. We must follow the Federal and provincial Privacy Acts, which are looked after, by the office of the privacy commissioner.
Dealing with the workers rights and information is so critical I feel it would be best to hire someone who understands and will follow the laws. Having a human resource department would benefit in the long run especially if you are going to continue to grow in workers. These people are trained and have the proper education to deal with the workers rights, their privacy and can help in the hiring portion.

Now the report is done you can see we have some work to be done to comply with the different regulations and laws. It is important we keep our workers safe and injury free for our and their peace of mind as well the cost in having incidents. I feel we can make XYZ Company a great, safe place to work if we train our workers to indentify and control hazards as well report all incidents and near misses and we correct and educate staff on those incidents. Also we need to follow all the laws and regulations set out by the federal and provincial government. Doing all
