A REACTION PAPER

Title of Article: Work-Life Fit and Enjoying What They Do Top the List of Reasons Why Employees Stay On the Job, New APA Survey Finds
Source & Date: American Psychological Association; August 28, 2012 www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2012/08/work-life
Author: American Psychological Association, David W. Ballard, PsyD, MBA
Summary: The article was written to draw attention to the reasons so many working Americans stay at their current jobs. A Workforce Retention Survey was conducted on adults age 18 and older and the results to that survey were published listing the percentage of men and women who are currently happy at their jobs. The survey also lists some of the reasons they stay at their job, (ex: benefits, co-workers, feeling of belonging) and the differences in reasons based on gender and age.
Reaction and Recommendations: The article talks about the reasons many Americans stay on their jobs. The survey was conducted on men and women ages 18 and older. My reaction to this article is I believe the survey would be more accurate if the survey was conducted on individuals based on the length of time on the job and not by the age of the person. Many 18 year olds are just heading off to college and have not joined the workforce yet. I believe the survey would reflect a more accurate percentage if they did the survey starting at a higher age, or as I stated earlier have been on their current job for some length of

Founded in 1995 by Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com has become one of the largest known online stores in the world. In 1995, Amazon.com sold its first book online, which was shipped from Bezos’s garage in Bellevue, Washington (Amazon.com Mission Statement, 2012). Many may not know that Amazon.com had a slow start because their online layout was not appealing. Within a few years Bezos attracted a few investors who took interest in his venture and invested approximately $140,000. Bezos decided to use the money to create a more appealing website to attract more customers. The sales for the next three years surpassed Bezos’s expectations. After analyzing the sales data, he found that people were not only purchasing domestically, but also from around the world. Amazon.com has grown from a small company to a worldwide business in just a few short years. This rapid growth requires a company to reevaluate how it does business if it plans to expand or maintain its marketplace for the future.…

The speech was an eye-opener for those people who did not get satisfaction for the work they did. A recent research that was conducted by Gallup showed that more than 70% of Americans dislike their careers (Fields 55). As a result, there is a sharp drop in the delivery of services because the love for the job has dissipated. In his speech, Steve Jobs talked about following one’s heart in choosing a career. Pursuing one’s passion brings satisfaction to an individual such that they may not wish to get anywhere else. Jobs used his experiences to make the audience understand his point. Jobs dropped out of college because he was not getting the satisfaction he was craving for. He felt that he was wasting his parent’s money learning the things he did not like. Jobs followed his dream and years later, he became one of the most successful people in the world. Although there are valid contrasting views to Steve Jobs’ idea of choosing a career, such as Jeff Haden’s views in Do What You Love? Screw That, Jobs’ notions are the most compelling (Fields 81). The example of the success achieved by Jobs is just one of those moments that people follow their dream and go on to achieve greatness. Many benefits will be accrued by an individual who chooses to follow his/her passion in a career…

A recent research was conducted on the random 25,000 United States citizens. They were employed, unemployed and underemployed between 1998 – 2012, one of the most volatile duration in American history. The study showed that there is a decline in job satisfaction among labor, workers doubt that their loyalty to employers is reciprocated, losing hope in their government and policy makers, and are frustrated about inadequate training and educational programs for unskilled or unemployed labors (Horn, What Workers Really Want and Need, 2013). The data was put together for the declining of job satisfaction among the US workers based on the various factors. The charts below summarizes…

Swarthmore College Professor Barry Schwartz published an op-ed in last Sunday’s New York Times entitled, “Rethinking Work.” The essay begins by noting that a “survey last year found that almost 90 percent of workers were either “not engaged” with or “actively disengaged” from their jobs.” So 9 out of 10 “workers spend half their waking lives doing things they don’t really want to do in places they don’t particularly want to be.” But Why?…
