I served as a student volunteer for Hammer and Nails a non-profit organization that works to serve the community with the mission of improving the quality of lives for low-income families through home repair. Most of the home owners in Canton, Ohio faced financial hardship and could not fund the extensive repair and renovation that their homes needed and thus relied on volunteer services for help. Through my time spent with Hammer and Nails I savored learning about the families within the community and how their lives were impacted by the local volunteers throughout many years. I enjoyed helping in the office with administrative work and with home renovations through painting and carpeting. I learned that a healthy life begins at home, and a clean and well-constructed home contributes to good physical and mental health.…

I have spent the majority of my life watching my father’s garment business grow from a small shop in Santee Alley to a large warehouse on Broadway Street. Over the years, I have learned a lot about the culture of the inner city; I have had the opportunity to see the differences between my life growing up in Santa Monica and the life of the struggling families and homeless people who live downtown. Motivated by this to devote the majority of my high-school career to community service, I realize that by pursuing architecture, I can make the most positive impact on society.…

The founders of the organization had the dream that homelessness will be a thing of the past and that it will no longer be a reality for families by providing them a decent place to live. Habitat has a Christian foundation, and it heavily influences the way the program conducts each project they work on. There are five principles that the program volunteers go by. To demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ,…

Youth homelessness is a significant issue in Canada by comprising 20% of the overall homeless population (Gaetz et al., 2013a). Unique to youth homelessness is causation and solutions, as traditional adult interventions are not developmentally appropriate. The Federal government’s HPS fails to meet youths’ needs by prioritizing adult housing first to reduce chronic homelessness by 50% within ten years (ESDC, 2017c). There is an opportunity to address youth homelessness, as the 2017 Budget has provided an unprecedented $2.1 billion allocation to the HPS redesign (ESDC, 2017b). The writer was appointed to the Federal advisory committee on homelessness to provide youth-specific recommendations for the renewal. This paper’s objective is to critically…
