Ethics is the principle that affects our behaviors. The impact that ethics has on counseling is different when the counseling is in a group or individual private setting. The challenges that group members and leaders face are different from those of the single session client and their leader. Within this paper discussions will address which type of session counselors prefer to deal with the ethical issues and why. This paper will explore ethics in groups and private settings. It will also explain the differences ethics makes on group therapy compared to individual therapy. Additionally, I will explain how my leadership and personal approach has been influenced by my ethics and the challenges I’ve faced while leading a counseling group as well as individual private sessions.…

When providing counseling services to individuals or a group of individuals, one needs to be cautious on his or her approach to everyone’s specific needs. Even though there are a variety of methods to solving a problem, some methods encounter ethical dilemmas. The ethical dilemma is about Jane, a counselor at a community college, who starts a relationship skills group for nine individuals between the ages of 18-25. In her primary course of action, she encounters several ethical dilemmas: she fails to provide sufficient information about the group in an advertisement, encounters ethical problems within the enrollment process, fails to provide an informed consent to the enrollees, and puts the other attendees at risk of harm. By identifying the code of ethics involved and the moral principles within her primary course of action, Jane is able to purpose and evaluate several options that she can properly apply to her final course of action, eliminating the ethical dilemmas.…

    Family Systems Theory

Couples and family therapy is embedded within the foundation of systems theory which postulates “psychological problems as arising from within the individual’s present environment and the intergenerational family system” (Corey, Corey & Callanan, 2006, p. 438). The family systems perspective is developed with the notion that clients’ problematic behaviors may serve a purpose for the family, may be a function of the family’s inability to operate efficiently and may be a symptom of dysfunctional patterns handed down across generations (Corey, Corey & Callanan, 2006). The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists proposed eight core ethical standards for couples and family therapy. These codes are outlined as: responsibility to clients; confidentiality; professional competence and integrity; responsibility to students and supervisees; responsibility to research participants; responsibility to the profession; financial arrangements and advertising (Corey, Corey & Callanan, 2006). Couples and family therapists are inevitably confronted with more potential ethical conflicts than individual therapists as the most common reasons reported for seeking couples therapy are problematic communication and lack of emotional attachment (Corey, Corey & Callanan,…

I was able to locate the current ethical standards with the American Counseling Association on my desk. An individual can locate a copy of these standards at this website: http://www.counseling.org/resources/codeofethics/TP/home/ct2.aspx. This version was published in 2005 and the next revision is up to the Ethics Revision Task Force. In addition I also have a copy of the American Mental Health Counselors Association Code of ethics. The website is: http://www.amhca.org/. Once at the website, you can look under about AMHCA for a link to the code of ethics or use the following URL: https://www.amhca.org/assets/news/AMHCA_Code_of_Ethics_2010_w_pagination_cxd_51110.pdf. The code can then be downloaded and saved for future reference. The AHCA was adopted in 1979, and was recently revised in 2011. Finally, I also use the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics. This website can be found at: http://www.naswdc.org/pubs/code/default.asp. This was originally approved by the 1996 NASW Delegate Assembly and was revised in 2008. All of these websites allow an individual to subscribe, which would allow an individual to stay on top of any new developments of changes to current publications.…

Today there is a great deal of emphasis placed on ethical behavior and its impact on the counseling relationship. As a counselor our first job is to do no harm. As responsible practitioners we must follow a code of ethics in order to best serve our clients and our mission to do no harm. This research has shown how the ethical systems are influenced by the world views, beliefs, and values of the organizations that create them. In this paper the ethics code of the ACA and the ethics code of the AACC were evaluated, compared and contrasted. The choice of the ethic code a practitioner will follow impacts their counseling practice greatly. The purpose of this paper was to compare and contrast the varying ethical systems f the ACA and the AACC and explain why they differ. What was found during the research and writing of this paper was an overwhelming amount of research supporting the idea that the ethics codes differed due to the worldview of the organization that authored them.…

According to Theodore P. Remley, Jr., and Barbara Herlihy in Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in Counseling, once the proper set of codes of ethics has been determined, the counselor must consider how these principles can be applied to the dilemma to express a counselor’s commitment to professional values (2014). Applying codes of ethics often exposes the “gray area” existing in real-life ethical dilemmas, and forces the counselor to consider the implications of an ethical decision from multiple viewpoints. In the case of Levi and Makena, both of whom function as individuals in private session in addition to their role as a couple within couples counseling sessions, examining the moral dimensions of the dilemma from multiple perspectives is especially paramount.…

Codes of ethics are guidelines that are created to give various professions and organizations a structure in which to work within. Codes of ethics could be considered structured behavioral ideals for professional people to follow. And, for the purpose of this paper several ethical codes for counseling professionals from both the American Counseling Association and the American Association of Christian Counselors will be examined. The ACA and the AACC are specialized organizations that emphasize one’s duty as a professional counselor to every client. However, the two organizations base their standards on very different foundations. The ACA basis…
