Brother Can You Spare A Dream
First impressions can be very misleading. We judge someone on a snippet of their personality, or a stereotype, and expect them to stick to the mold we set. Very rarely they do, and very often we are surprised by who they really are. In "Brother, Can You Spare a Dream" by Jackie French Koller, the main character, Sam, lumps his family's boarder in with a stereotype of city men, thinking the boarder to be a 'thief' who 'stole' a job that should have been offered to Sam. In "Amir", by Paul Fleischman, the man character, Amir, believes his neighbors to be an unhealthy mix of snooty and extreme introverts. Little does he know, a simple garden brings out a sense of calmness and kinship, and revealed true personalities. First impressions can, indeed, be very misleading, and it is wise to keep an open mind when meeting or witnessing the acts of strangers.
