Brief Summary Of The Novel 'Boy21' By Matthew Quick
The novel Boy21 was written by author Matthew Quick. The story takes place in the broken down city of Bellmont. The author organizes the novel in chronological order to keep the time frames in correlation with when the events occurred. The setting is critical to the story because the school he goes to generally has a direct effect on events that occur during the story. The story has both a humorous but serious tone throughout different parts of the story.
The protagonists of the book are Finley, Russ, and Erin. The antagonists are the Irish Mob and the bullies at the school they attend. The protagonists are all static characters because they undergo no change. The main antagonist in the story is a 19 year old senior who makes moves at Erin and constantly bullies Finley. The story depicts him dropping Finely as he proceeds to punch Erin in the nose. I can infer that the 19 year old senior thinks that due to his age and size, he can do what he wants while disregarding the feelings of others. The character I feel I relate to the most is Erin because she doesn’t give up and won’t back down from any challenge.

The main conflict in the story is that Russ is traumatized after the death of his parents so he stops playing basketball for the school and as the story progresses, Erin gets hit by a car which motivates him to then rejoin the team. Three critical events that shaped the development of the story are; 1) When Russ lost his parents, 2) When Erin was run over by a car and couldn’t play basketball anymore. , and 3) when Russ began to play basketball again. The part that helped me predict the outcome of the conflict was when Erin was run over which led to Russ rejoining the team. The title relates to the story because “Boy21” is also Russ’ basketball

“An exciting adventure.” That was the mentality of boys and men all over the North and South, leading up to the Civil war. Seeing an alternative to the monotonous farm life, many men were eager and filled with anticipation at the thought of being in a war. In The Boys War by Jim Murphy, these men and boys learn the truth about war. Many preconceptions are shattered, and fantasies are broken wide open by reality. One common misconception was that the fighting would be constant, but this was not the case. When soldiers were not marching, being drilled, or in the midst of a skirmish, there was often leisure time. During these periods, men and boys were free to pursue activities and games. Gambling, pulling pranks, and occasional fraternization were three pastimes of men and boys alike during the war.…

In the novel they give us the impression that the setting is in modern day Syracuse. The main character and the person that tells most of the story is Melinda Sordino. In the novel she is a struggling teen that had to deal with getting raped at a party a summer before her first day of high school. At the party she ends up getting drunk and meeting another character named Andy Evans. After getting raped she panics and calls 911 and the police break into the party and they arrest some of her friends for underage drinking. That summer she lost her friends because of what she had done at the party and held grudges without knowing she had gotten raped by Andy Evans. Her grades end up getting affected tremendously and she looses who she was before getting raped, which was a happy and girly teenage girl. Throughout the novel she dresses in dull clothing and try’s to cope with the situation. At the end of the novel she finally snaps and tells her old friends what had happened and ends up as a sort of “inspiration” or hero and gains the respect of her former friends and high school and try’s to move on from that step by step.…

The school board eventually confronts Carter who justifies his actions, explaining he wants to give his team the opportunity and option to further education so they won't resort to crime. This Boy's Life, set in America in the 1950’s, is a compelling memoir by Tobias Wolff, whom recreates the frustrations and cruelties faced throughout his adolescence, as he fights for identity and self-respect. During this period of time, America underwent major changes in the political and economic spheres, which in turn were responsible for its social makeover. Society in this time was geared toward family; marriage and children being part of the national agenda. The 1950’s was also an age of male dominance, where even if women worked, their assumed proper place was at home. Throughout the memoir, the protagonist, young Jack Wolff, makes it difficult for the reader to feel much affection towards him, as his actions prove to be troublesome and unruly. However, as the memoir progresses, Jacks struggle reveal the reasons for his actions which sequentially shape his character, providing the readers with understanding and sympathy towards his inexorable situation. The fraudulent lies and deceitful ways of Jack can be frustrating upon the reader; though we come to realise that he does this in order to be accepted by the people around him. Jack also engages in fights and unfaithfully betrays his best friend Arthur, although it becomes evident that he only does this in order to gain Dwight’s approval of him. The lack of a real father figure in Jack’s life has a profound impact on him and his desperate attempt to develop his identity, which further supports the readers’ emotions of sympathy towards him.…

The main reason I am interested in this novel is because it involves a sport. I have read other novels about sports such as The Underdogs and The Million Dollar Throw. I enjoyed reading these books and the novel Boy 21 seems similar to them. This novel has also sparked my interest because it is takes place in a ghetto town and contains tragedies. These aspects add suspense and make the book more interesting.…
