THE STRUGGLE IS REAL I found myself dreaming of the day I would finally "have a life". I was a stay-at-home mom for eight years. During those eight years there were wonderful memories made with my son and husband, but towards the end the euphoria wore off and reality hit. In a short story written by David Sedaris called "Let it Snow", he shared a piece of his childhood to his readers. He was in the 5th grade living in Binghamton, New York with his two sisters, mom, and dad. His dad was always gone due to work and his mom 's moodiness. Snow fell for the first time in years which caused schools too close for five days. This disrupted his mom’s life and when she couldn 't handle

So he and his sisters played for a while and came back a few hours later to find that the door was still locked. They rang the doorbell and their mom never answered, so they looked through the window, saw her drinking wine, and watching television. To get their moms’ attention they yelled, knocked, and even threw snowballs at the window which she bluntly ignored. So they got mad. It was getting late and they wanted to teach both of their parents a lesson. They came up with a plan where one of them would lay in the middle of the road and get hit by a car. They figured it would make the parents feel bad for not showing them attention that they obviously needed. While his sister was laying in the middle of the road the neighbor drove up, saw her, and then told their mom. She finally came and got them. He clearly states that this was just how things were when he was growing up. I find that stay at home moms can face many

David Sedaris’ essay, “Let It Snow” is a reflection of Sedaris’ past. The overall structure and plot of the story plays a part in how Wolff viewed his own life within the characters. It opens with a simple yet intriguing statement: "Tub had been waiting for an hour in the falling snow" (Wolff 1). Immediately, this hook does its job drawing the reader into the story and making him wonder what is going on. In the same paragraph we find that Tub is walking down the street, carrying a rifle and seemingly, shooting the breeze. But then a car comes from nowhere, nearly killing Tub and forcing him to leap off the roadside. Inside the truck, Tub's friends, Kenny and Frank, wait laughing at the apparent "joke" that they had just played. Tub doesn't seem quite as amused, stating, "You could've killed me!" (Wolff 5). Then, the three friends begin to make their way towards the woods to go hunting for…

The morning of October 31st, 2012 was a normal, typical October Tacoma morning. It was a brisk 41 degrees outside with clouds over head. They were gray in color and the drizzle showed no signs of stopping. Thankfully most of us need not worry about the chill, ways to stay dry or where our next source of nourishment will come from on morning such as these. Warm houses and roofs over our head protect most American from the unruly elements that as we all know, can change at a moment’s notice in the state of Washington. Unfortunately, due to less than desirable life choices or circumstances, most of our under-culture has to deal with these situations on a day to day basis. Mr. Aaron Hill falls into this category. On that morning Aaron started his day like any other. He attempted to get dry, and stay as such in any way possible. He then proceeded to find any source of food he possibly could. At 6’ 1’ and a hundred and fifty pounds, it was critical for him to gain some type of sustenance by any means conceivable. This meant begging on the streets, digging through commercial and residential trash receptacles and even steeling at times. On this day, Aaron was not successful on his hunt for food. Aaron was starving. As night slowly started to shroud the light from the sky, children started to emerge from their homes in costumes ranging from goblins to princesses. As many do in Aaron’s position, he had forgotten what day it was and was over joyed at the site of kids running around with candy. In his mind, he thought he could pick candy from the ground that children had dropped or ask kids to share the fruits of their Halloween labors. His plan, in practice, was less than successful. After giving up on attaining some candy to settle the hunger pains that had been pulling at him for days, Aaron decided to rummage through one of the local Trader Joe’s grocery store garbage containers that had…

Robert Hayden’s language and imagery in his poem “Those Winter Sundays” reveal the speaker’s tone for his childhood indifference to his father’s subtle love as well as his adult admiration for his father’s sacrifice. The speaker, an adult now, recognizes the indifference that was between him and his father throughout his childhood. He now regrets the times when his father worked hard to provide for the family, but never was thanked. The father went through everyday life, “laboring on the weekdays,” (4) and “driving out the cold,” (11) every Sunday.…

I hopped off the bus, my backpack bouncing against my back. A combination of gravel, road salt, and snow crunched beneath my boots as I turned down my driveway. Leafless trees lined my pathway, their branches heavy with wet snow. All the way down the drive I slipped and slid as fast as I could without landing in a snowbank. I didn’t particularly want to contribute to my dour mood. It had been a stressful week: there had been a rehearsal for the musical every day; several important deadlines were coming up; and, most importantly, I hadn’t heard from my camp yet about being accepted into the Aide/CIT program.…

2014 was such a year. With snow suddenly falling in February, everyone was caught off guard by the inclement weather. As a junior in highschool I clung to the tv and computer screen checking to see the school’s inclement weather announcement. I refreshed and refreshed until finally it appeared, “school closed”. Yes! Like a miner who just stuck oil I danced around the house telling the entire household about the news. School was closed and that could mean nothing else but more sleep. Though wide awake, I crawled back into my now chilled bed to catch up on sleep and dreamed of awaking to a winter wonderland.…

This past February, four students at North Dakota State University were killed in a car crash during a snowstorm. They were driving back from Minneapolis, Minnesota after visiting their families for Christmas break. That night, the weather reported heavy snow, strong winds, and slippery roads. One of the four students killed was Danielle Renninger. After the crash, the Huffington Post interviewed Danielle’s father where, while trying to hold back tears, he said, “We had the most amazing weekend. She was so thankful for life. She was making comments about how wonderful her life is. It was just so strange, thinking of it now.”…
