The statement should be well organized, concise, and completely free of grammar, punctuation and spelling errors. Try to be original and interesting without sounding trite. To write the best statement possible, you will want to start early, write several drafts, and let other people read and comment on it.
Before You Begin a Draft, Keep the Following in Mind
Remember Your Audience
Admission committee members usually consist of university faculty and public school teachers or administrators. You need to understand and be able to correctly use “education lingo.” Do not “talk down” to your readers. Stick to what you are an expert in—your life and experiences.
Establish Your Voice
Choose a voice/tone that is confident without sounding arrogant. Avoid a tone that sounds sweet, innocent, or naive. Usually a straightforward tone will serve you best. If you need to explain poor grades, do so without making excuses. State what affected your performance and follow-up with what you did to improve the situation.
