Breast Cancer Personal Statement
Research in the field of health sciences has been my passion since high school. My interest in health sciences first began to bloom when my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, and following 8 years of struggle, she eventually succumbed to cancer. I would regularly go for hospital visits and would always be fascinated by seeing the treatment being performed on people. Following that, many of my other relatives were detected with cancer, and my family was told that we are at a higher risk for cancer. This made me ardent to pursue a career in the health sciences and I began to volunteer at the Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center to be able to shadow physicians, get closer to patient treatment and to familiarize myself with the hospital environment. …show more content…

My research interest is on the rapid increase of cancer in the world population in the recent years and nothing has been able to stop this deadly disease from killing millions of people around the world. I would like to research on the daily lifestyle habits that cause cancer, and want to educate people to avoid these habits through the American Cancer Society volunteer

Other personal experiences include two of my siblings, both served in Iraq, who were exposed to enemy gunfire while serving. I lost my grandmother eight years ago, who was my rock in every possible way. My grandmother was diagnosed with Leukemia, which she kept from everyone in my family until two months before her death. I believe family stress developed due to her sudden death. Aside from family stress, I personally struggled with my grandmother’s death, who reflected as a woman with great strength and lots of wisdom; who also taught me values, honesty, and community. Further, five years later, in the year 2009, I lost another family member to gunshot violence, who was shot in the head and died instantly; this family member was also…

My initial motivation was to study medicine. However, this novelty of an idea wore off as I have learned that the road to success and pursuit of happiness in life is not necessarily a straight one. This has encouraged me to follow my heart no matter how daunting the journey can be. William James once said “the greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being has the power to alter his life by his attitude”. It is deeply rooted in this philosophy that I desire to become a physician assistant (PA) where I hope to provide quality healthcare to the underprivileged, an area of medicine, which I have noticed to be dramatically underserved.…

Everything in my life began to change, from my friends to my attitude. My future was looking bright. The only thing left was to pick a profession, something that would ignite my spark. That was when my parents were involved in a terrible accident. In March 2009, my parents were pedestrians struck by a car. My mother was diagnosed with a fractured tibial plateau, and was wheelchair bound for five months. During this difficult time I accompanied her to numerous appointments and met many different medical personnel. Surprisingly, I became inspired. It was an awful time for my family, but it was an experience that changed my life. Everything about the healthcare system fascinated me. I asked many questions about medications, imaging techniques that were used on my mother, and job descriptions of practically everyone I had encountered. I remember telling a nurse about how I found the hospital to be the most interesting place that I have ever visited and she replied, “Well if you feel that way, you should become a doctor, they practically live…
