Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into surrounding tissues or spread to distant areas of the …show more content…
The disease occurs almost entirely in women; however, men can get it too.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among
American women, except for skin cancers. About 1 in 8 (12%) women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. The chance that breast cancer will be responsible for a woman’s death is about 1 in 36 (about 3%). Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1989, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment.
The goal of screening exams for breast cancer is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms (like a lump that can be felt).

The planning of this project started in the beginning of August. We assumed that most of our community knew and/or has had a family member that has had breast cancer due to many people in our community being related. However, we felt like many individuals in our community didn’t know enough about breast cancer. Research was completed to gather information on breast cancer to provide correct facts to present to them. Over the next few months, the chapter worked on gathering and organizing the information that would be passed out to the Ringgold community. During the first committee meeting my advisor delegated two members’ head of the community service project. At the next meeting we decided what we would have to do in order to get the word out that we were hosting a breast cancer walk. This following is an outline of
what we had planned:
● August o Held a meeting at Ringgold High School o Held a voting session to see who was interested in working on the community service project
● September o Counted the votes and appointed the two members that will be working on
