By breaking rules and laws, an individual opens themselves up to possible consequences for their actions, a consequence being something that occurs due to something else. The difference does not stem from the feelings of the members of the society, but in the perceived potential consequences. A person who ignores a society’s informal rules may not go to prison, but he may become completely useless nevertheless because no one will have anything to do with him.
There are, in fact, possible issues with informal rules. They may risky and dangerous to break
(Pauley 1). A person who breaks a formal rule may go to jail. After serving the allotted sentence they are welcomed back into society to hopefully continue the social norms. But a person who breaks informal rules may experience less dramatic consequences that may last an entire life, not just the length of a jail sentence. Informal rules are typically unspoken so people who are not aware of them can break them without ever knowing. Once they break one, they may break another rule directly following it.
