When people are given absolute freedom they feel the need to create rules and structure. This has been shown time and time again, and without rules and structure we, as a human race, might cease to exist because there would be no teamwork or leadership. Within those confines and rules each given community creates an unspoken set of social norms, which are expectations and regulations about how people should act and present themselves. All across our planet we see a wide array of social norms from who should shake hands first, or if you should shake hands at all. In America, especially, we have very distinct, yet unspoken, social norms. When broken, people get angry, annoyed, or uncomfortable. However, we as a human race have proved to be very selfish, and unless we are directly being wronged or inconvenienced, most people will ignore the wrong doing, try every way possible not to get involved, and avoid the same thing happening to them. Also, people are more likely to find something, like breaking social norms, amusing than annoying if it is not directed towards them.

In a store, or any public place, you are meant to keep to yourself and your given party, only handle things that belong to you, and (if shopping) find your own things and buy them yourself. To experiment with this idea of breaking the norms, I went into a store and decided to take other people’s things that they were going to buy and see what happened. I made sure to go down crowded isles to see what the other people, the ones not being inconvenienced, would do also. So, I went down the aisles and would pick a person and ask them what something very generic was in their basket (this alone got stares and aggravated tones). Then, I would take the item from them. Out of all the times I did this (I did this seven times) not one onlooker said anything to me or attempted to stop me. However, they would often laugh

    It was on a Friday night at 3 a.m. A man that was in his early 30’s walks in while I was ringing up a customer at the cash register, wearing nothing but a towel around his waist. The man seemed to be from the Middle Eastern because of his thick beard and accent. It took him 10 minutes to rome around the store to get what he needs. While he was shopping he left everything he needed on top of the counter, and in those 10 minutes he got so many things.     There are many ways a person could be described as psychologically abnormal. There is a statistical infrequency which states that a person’s trait that is rare or statistically unusual could be described as abnormal. For example, a person with an IQ that is above or below the average IQ of society could be considered abnormal. A person with a higher IQ wouldn’t necessarily be considered abnormal, but they would be highly regarded for their intelligence.     My social norm was walking on campus backwards for an entire day. This was a major challenge to me because when people are not doing the expected in a social environment, I have many opinions on those particular people. So this was definitely a new experience for me. When I first knew this was my idea, I was very nervous and anxious. I was so worried about what other students on campus would think about me.     Field Experiment: Violation of a Social Norm. In this project, we were asked to violate a social norm in a public setting and make observations on what we saw and how people respond. The social norm that I chose to violate was simply that of common courtesy. I decided to take myself and my 17 year old daughter, Zoe, to a few of the Wal-Mart’s in the area and walk around, bumping into random people and saying absolutely nothing to apologize. We would take turns simply bumping into them and keep walking. Norms are a very important part of society. In our text book, norms are defined as “established rules of behavior or standards of conduct”. (Diana Kendall, 2011, 2008) Without norms, a society has no groundwork on which to stand. It would not have any, as the name promotes, normalcy. Norms are what make a society distinctive. Other notions such as ethnocentrism also tie into how norms affect a society. People who are ethnocentric often associate the norms of their society with that of others and through this; determine that their own society is grander. In contrast of these philosophies, I believe that all societies are normal according to their own norms, not the norms of others. In doing my experiment, I expect different reactions from the people I encounter, as well as totally different reactions from the same people who get bumped into by my daughter.
