Ushahidi 's rugged BRCK, 'the backup generator for the internet '

SUMMARY OF ARTICLE
"Ushahidi", which means "testimony" in Swahili, was a website that was initially developed to map reports of violence in Kenya after the post-election fallout at the beginning of 2008. Since then, the name "Ushahidi" has come to represent the people behind the;"Ushahidi Platform" (Ushahidi, 2013).Ushahidi’s motto is 'if it works in Africa, it will work anywhere '."
Ushahidi is a powerful platform for crowdsourcing data in less than ideal conditions, be they because of a natural disaster or simply because of a lack of infrastructure. It 's been used effectively, for example, in the aftermath of the disputed 2007 Kenyan elections, the 2010 Haiti earthquake and the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, generating maps for the emergency services and documenting eyewitness testimonies.
The kind of rugged environments that Ushahidi was created for are also the kinds of places where web access can be decidedly unreliable at best. That 's why Ushahidi has developed BRCK. (Steadman, 2013)
BRCK is a wireless, battery-powered modem that aims to help users connect to the web no matter where they are in the world. The Brck device works with unreliable power and unreliable Internet to provide connectivity to entire villages. (Scaturro, 2013)
Described as "the backup generator for the internet", BRCK can support up to 20 devices connected at once, has a tough exterior shell and an eight hour battery life so it can sit out any blackouts. Like a smartphone, it can connect to the web via ethernet, Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G, shifting between them dependent on service. (Steadman, 2013)
Each BRCK is connected to the BRCK Cloud, which lets users check on their BRCK from anywhere in the world even if they 're not directly connected to it and, if needed, set up alerts and applications. More

Clay Shirky opens up his TED talk with a true story about Kenya, and some of its citizens. During 2007 there was a dispute with the presidential election and ethnic violence broke out in the country. Quickly following there was a media blackout, during which a lawyer in Nairobi was chronicling the events in a blog. As she was tracking the violence and keeping others informed the comments began to streamline and if they contained pertinent information, she would collate them and re-post them for others to easily see. She reached a point where she could no longer keep up and must have lamented in a post that she wished there was an easy way to categorize and aggregate all of this information automatically. Two volunteer programmers responded and launched Ushahidi.com, which is in open sourced website which does just that, and puts it all on a map. Since then platforms of Ushahidi have been used in countries and projects all around the world.…

Considering that The Bloom Design Group is now using a WAN system to coordinate its business processes, an appropriate disaster recover plan will include having an alternate site to step in, in the event of an emergency. This will include an outside vendor who will provide backup services in the event that the programs at The Bloom Design Group fail for one reason or another. In the interest of financial feasibility, The Group should contract for a warm site to step in if the home networks are compromised.…

    Power Outage

Electrical power has become an indispensable part of modern day life. Our work, leisure, healthcare, economy, and livelihood depend on a constant supply of electrical power. Even a temporary stoppage of power can lead to relative chaos, monetary setbacks, and possible loss of life. Our cities live on electricity and without the customary supply from the power grid, pandemonium would break loose. Power outages can be especially disastrous when it comes to life-support systems in places like hospitals and nursing homes, or in co-ordination facilities such as in airports, train stations, and traffic control.…
