Braveheart -Movie vs. Real Life

The name Braveheart refers to a Scottish peasant named William Wallace whom which fought for Scotland's freedom against the English King, Longshanks (Edward II). There is little true knowledge known about William Wallace, and what is known is questionable. Recently there was a movie made about the life of William Wallace, which was titled Braveheart. Overall, the movie portrayed a very clear picture of William Wallace's life, but there were also some things that happened in the movie that were fiction. Such as there wasn't a bridge at the battle of Stirling Bridge, the relationship between the Princess and William Wallace, and the Hollywood stuff in the movie. In this essay I will talk about these ways in which I feel that some of the movie was fictional.

The Scottish were quite quick to attack the English who were trying to assemble on the other side of the bridge. That was the way the Scottish won in the actual battle. However in the movie, the Scottish just got lucky and won the highly outnumbered battle. This is probably the most noticeable piece of history poorly portrayed in the movie.

The second is the relationship that William Wallace had with the Princess of England. This is ridiculous for

How different was the William Wallace portrayed in extracts C and D (in the 15th century) from that portrayed in extracts G, H and I (in the late 19th century), and why? Despite being considered as the greatest hero and persona in the history of Scotland William Wallace’s reputation and character are really controversial in terms of authenticity due to the different interpretations and descriptions that has been given by various historical and non-historical sources during different ages shortly and long after his life and act. Wallace’s legacy kept its value among the Scottish folk for centuries. In the eyes of the ordinary people he has been always a legend. Many of the events in the movie also actually took place but were changed somewhat from what is recorded in history. King Richard was shot with an arrow and killed but his death was not immediate as in the movie. He actually died several days after the battle when his wound became infected. Another example of Hollywood re-writing history occurs with Geoffrey the archbishop of York. Geoffrey did lead a revolt by refusing to allow the crown to collect taxes within his holdings, but he never led any battles as in the movie.…

Gibson’s distinct representation of King Longshanks and his respective soldiers as the enemies of the Scottish people in the film implies that Gibson created this film in order to convey the belief that Scotland should be a separate country from the United Kingdom. By detailing the Scottish Wars of Independence in the film, Gibson alludes to the 18th century inclusion of Scotland in the United Kingdom and implies that Scottish people today experience oppression as a result of being under English rule. In order to effectively establish his position, Gibson uses Longshanks to represent the English government today and how both sought to exert their rule over the land of…
