When it comes to BP and the changes that were made in the post-crisis era since the oil spill it is very important to reference their history of safety violations. The oil spill of project Deepwater Horizon was one largest examples of their previous lack of care and respect to safety and the earth. Previous to the spill they have been in trouble with the authorities for illegal dumping of waste products in northern Alaska as well as being fined $13 million by OSHA for failing to comply with safety violations four years after an explosion at a Texas refinery in 2005. BP has a notable track record for paying out billions of dollars to offer compensation for accidents or slight misjudgments of ethical behavior. Tony Hayward, a British born businessman, replaced former CEO John Browne, Baron Browne of Madingley, on May 1 2007. John Browne is widely held accountable for all the drastic cuts in BP’s safety and maintenance programs which lead to the illegal dumping and the Texas refinery explosion which killed 15 people. Browne left the company abruptly after he admitted he gave an “untruthful account” to court about how he met a previous love companion. BP then appointed Tony Hayward who served as BP’s chief executive of Exploration & Production before taking the position of CEO. To many professionals in the industry Hayward was not ready for this promotion and the responsibilities it brought on. The crisis of Deepwater Horizon was the changing catalyst or trigger at BP and their safety regulations and crisis communication. During the beginning of the crisis Tony Hayward was guilty of having a callous and uncaring appeal to the victims affected by the oil spill. Due to his behavior and BP’s lack to remove him from the situation fast enough many were witnesses to a CEO that seemed more overwhelmed by his own suffering from the crisis that he could not connect with the actual process of getting it fixed. BP

    BP dedicated a portion of its restoration website to highlight technological advancements it has implemented for safer oil drilling, in hope of restoring public trust in the company. This portion of the website, titled “Safer drilling”, explains what went wrong during the oil spill and the lessons BP has learned from the spill. One of the documents provided goes in-depth into the analysis of all the problems that occurred during the spill.     I am focusing on Tony Hayward, former CEO of BP and I am here to address the issue regarding the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that exploded and ultimately caused one of the nation’s worst environmental disasters in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. To begin, there are many facts that led up to the incident, and then for many years after. BP and Hayward had already been questioned on their ethical conduct. The questions include fraud, environmental crimes, deaths, and the endangering of habitats dating from 2005 to the present (Ferrell 431). There have been too many other oil spills and problems throughout the years to just assume this would not happen in the gulf. The explosion happened on April 20th 2010 where eleven people were reported missing and seventeen were injured. After the explosion a blowout preventer that was intended to prevent release of crude oil failed to activate (Research.co). The deepwater horizon rig then sank under 5,000 ft. of water. This ultimately made the oil rig very tough to fix and plug the oil leak. A homeland security risk analysis stated that “the incident poses a negligible risk to regional oil supply markets and will not cause significant national economic impacts” (Research.co). This shows that Hayward and the company had no real concern on the environment and the impacts that it could cause. As weeks and months passed, BP continued to optimize oil recovery rates and fabricate how well the drilling relief wells were doing. On April 28th the coast guard stated “the flow of oil is 5,000bpd, five times greater than first estimated, after a third leak was discovered” (Research.co). And this continued on with multiple failed attempts at getting the oil spill under control.…

    The match that lit the fuse of the gigantic spill was a massive explosion on April 20th, 2010, on the Deepwater Horizon oil-drilling platform that killed eleven workers.
