Boy in Striped Pajamas
‘The Boy in the Striped Pajamas’ In the novel ‘The Boy in the Striped Pajamas’ by John Boyne, the most important relationship is between Bruno, a German boy whose father is a Nazi Commandant and Jewish boy Shmuel who is a Prisoner of War kept in Auschwitz. This relationship is important to the idea of friendship across the divide. It shows that friendship can brake racial barriers, change peoples perspectives and get people to stick people together in all situations. Shmuel and Bruno’s relationship shows the idea of friendship across the divide because despite major differences they still form a close bond. Bruno is a German and Shmuel is Jewish and during the Holocaust the Germans went to war to eliminate the Jewish Population. Because of this Bruno and Shmuel should have been kept apart, yet they still managed to keep a strong and close relationship. This can be seen when Bruno makes the effort to meet Shmuel everyday even though there would be major consequences “You’re my best friend Shmuel...My best friend for life.” Bruno comments on their close friendship. The idea of friendship across the divide is shown through Bruno and Shmuel’s relationship because they have a close friendship that displays braking down racial barriers in order to have a best friend. The relationship between Bruno and Shmuel also shows the idea because their friendship is innocent. Both boys are young and because of this they both show their innocence through what they talk about when they meet up, not knowing about what is happening around them. Their innocence can be seen when Bruno says “It’s so unfair... I don’t see why I have to be stuck over here on this side of the fence where there’s no-one to talk to and no one to play with and you get top have dozens of friends.” because Bruno is innocent he doesn’t understand why Shmuel is stuck on the other side with thousands of Jewish people where he’s stuck

The idea of a Jewish male and a German girl becoming good acquaintances is an unimaginable, punishable thought in the time that The Book Thief is written. However, Max Vandenburg and Liesel Meminger went against this abomination during this time and during their friendship Max Vandenburg gave many things to Liesel: purpose through strength, purpose in knowing that Jews are humans as well, and purpose in knowing the power of words. Max and Liesel are two similar but very different characters in The Book Thief. These two characters although conflicted find comfort in each other through seeing things in color and words, which gives Liesel a different view on varying prominent things in her life, in Germany. By better understanding how Max and Liesel compare and differ in character a reader can determine how Max’s life gives Liesel purpose through making her stronger, showing her the brutality of the Nazi’s, and showing her the power of words.…

Therefore, Liesel evolves from a lonely character that had nobody to a character who creates many incredible bonds with her new family and friends. Even though Liesel has a hard time trusting and allowing herself to vulnerable, she easily starts an incredible and amazing bond with her foster father, Hans Hubermann. When Liesel was getting to know him, “Liesel observed the strangeness of her foster father’s eyes. They were made of kindness, and sliver... Upon seeing those eyes, understood that Hans Hubermann was worth a lot” (Zusak 34). No one has ever played her music, and no one has ever taught her how to read till Hans came along. No one has ever cared for her like Hans has. This is why Liesel loves Hans the most out of everybody. Liesel also starts an amazing and a heartwarming relationship with Max Vandenburg, who is a Jew surviving in Hubermann’s basement. “You could say argue that Liesel Meminger had it easy. She did have it easy compared to max Vanderburg... anything was better than being a Jew.” (Zusak 161). Liesel was a lost girl who had nobody till her new family found her. Max has also lost his family but he is also by the Nazis. Liesel and Max are both broken people living in a broken world. They both have lost many important things in their lives, this is what makes them bond really easily. Liesel did not care that Max was Jewish; they still create…

At the time of war, Bruno was completely oblivious to the atrocities around him. He is unaware that his father his a Nazi Commander. This relates to Zusak’s The Book Thief since Bruno does not know that his father is a Nazi Commander and he would be too young to understand, and Liesel’s parents were communists, a concept she didn’t understand either because of her age, so they were both in danger. Bruno says: “My father’s a soldier, but not one that takes peoples clothes away”. (Boyne, 114). Even though Bruno knows his dad is a soldier, he does not want to believe that his dad is the cause of this wrongfulness. Little does Bruno know that it is unfortunately true and his dad is the one putting him in danger. Throughout all the horrors going on around them, Shmuel and Bruno share a certain childlike innocence, even though Shmuel is a prisoner and has certainly seen horrific sights. His parents who do not want him to know about the horrors of the Holocaust, on the other hand, carefully protect Bruno. This relates to Zusak’s The Book Thief because Liesel and Rudy are both young when the horrific events of the Holocaust are happening, and they are all unsure of what is going on. Bruno and Shmuel possess innocence just like Liesel and Rudy’s because their friendship is apart from the common order that both inhabit. Bruno's friendship with Shmuel is one in…

This scene is very touching as the two characters drink wine and snack on mozzarella. "Let's forget everything, let's get drunk," says Antonio to his son. "We'll eat and be happy for now." Through the food, drinks, and cheerful songs, the two try to forget their problems of the day. This is a scene that everyone can relate to; when you are having a bad day or a bad time in your life, you want to go out and just forget, even if it's for a moment. Bruno keeps looking self consciously at a rich young boy dressed in black who sits near by. This young boy returns his glances with a snotty look. "Eat, eat, don't worry," Antonio says to his son. This scene demonstrates that even in childhood, it is hard to escape from the current conditions. As we saw in the earlier scenes, Bruno is responsible for many things at a very young age. He helps his father clean his bike, closes the window for the baby, and remembers to say goodbye to his mother. Bruno is a character of the middle class. He is not as hopeless as the two children panhandling on the street; one who receives a swift kick from Antonio's fellow employee. However Bruno is not as well off as the young boy at the restaurant. He is stuck in the middle, which is very frustrating because slipping into poverty seems so easy to do while becoming well off seems so far…

When he did he met a boy named Shmuel they became, best friends. Even though Shmuel is on the other side of the fence, that doesn’t stop Bruno from meeting him at their secret hiding spot. Because Bruno was naive, this book had some interesting twists and turns. If the author wrote that Bruno knew what the Nazis believed about the Jews and Adolf Hitler because his father told him about the situation, what would there have been to make the book more exciting? Bruno would have known about what was going on and would have just agreed with what his father was saying and doing because he wouldn’t have had a reason not to believe him. In the long run it was good that Bruno was clueless because he got to meet his best friend even though it wasn’t allowed. Bruno’s family realized that ‘Out-With’ isn't the safest place for children. Hitler caused a lot of pain and suffering for those people he despised, but when people realized what he was doing they put an end to his…

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by Mark Herman opened my eyes to a different side of the Holocaust. The film was told through the point of view of a young child outside the camps and how this horrific event looked to them. Bruno being so young and naïve had no idea what Shmuel was going through. For example, when Bruno first found the fence and Shmuel he asked if he had any friends and Shmuel responded with kind of and Bruno was jealous that he had someone to play with and that Bruno was all alone in his house. Bruno also brought up the point that no one around him had the name Shmuel or that he`s never heard of Shmuel and thought it his name was completely bizarre. Therefore showing Bruno had no exposure to such a culture previous to meeting…
