To design and build a pop bottle rocket to fly as far as possible.

Research

Pop bottle rockets are used for the study of aeronautics all over north america.Water rockets are used in schools to help students understand the principles of aeronautics. The Science provides challenges of bottle rocket design and flight, including altitudes and distances reached. A model rocket has four components of flight to it aerodynamics, weight, thrust, lift and drag. Water rockets have been a source of entertainment and education for many years. They are usually made with an empty two-litter plastic soda bottle by adding water and pressurizing it with air for launching. before the launch the bottle is filled with some amount of water, which acts as a propellent for the launch and thrust for the rocket. Since water is about 100 times heavier than air, the expelled water produces more thrust than compressed air alone. the pressure in the body is equal to the pressure produced by the pump. the fins are attached to the body increase stability(best if the fins are near the bottom). To many or non-aerodynamic fins can create a lot of drag and really hold back your rocket from flying at its maximum distance. Also weight in the nose cone helps to keep the rocket in a straight path to its destination, instead of flying to high in the air or not going in its straight course of flight.

Design

At first my designs were to get as much to and aero or a real rocket as possible. But after researching i thought of more aerodynamic looks to my rocket to help it fly in a straighter path with as least drag as possible. My optimal solution was to build a rocket that looked like a rocket but was as aerodynamic and had the least drag as possible. I chose this solution because I knew that my rocket had to be as aerodynamic as possible, also that it had to create the least drag as possible, and the most lift.     The rocket I produced was a normal looking rocket compared to the group of rockets I was working with. It was medium size in length and thickness. The head of the rocket was a little wide and lose, and the flaps were not arrow dynamic what so ever. To improve the flight I could have made my rocket shorter and thinner because the smaller the mass the greater acceleration. Doing this would improve the acceleration of the projectile in this case the rocket. Also to improve the acceleration I could add more alka-seltzer to the film case. Doing this would add a greater force to push off of which would make the rocket go higher and faster. Lastly I could have made the structure for the rocket more aerodynamic.     There were not as many steps as I thought there would be involved in building the bottle itself. First I emptied out two two liters of pop. I then cut off the tops of both bottles, and threw out one of the bases. In the leftover base, I poured water, aquatic gravel, and a fake plant for the fish. I then put the fish in it’s new happy home. In order to feed him, I cut out a flap leading to the water that I can put fish food in. After that, I began working on the top layer. I placed one of the tops, with the cap still on, about half an inch into the original base. I taped it securely into the base, to ensure that the whole upper layer would not crush the fish. Then I put my plants into the half-built top layer. After that I placed my second bottle top on top of the base, creating another funnel. I taped the top securely on, finishing the bottle.     All the materials you will need are very simple house hold; scissors, balloon, vinegar, baking soda, rubber band, empty bottle, clear wrap, straight pin, marker, thin piece of wood, drinking straws, and duct tape. One of the first steps is to make the rocket fuel the key component in this rocket. I began with placing ¼ or 1/3 of vinegar in a normal size bottle, after that you will make the baking soda bomb. You take a piece of clear wrap and place a good amount of baking soda in a square piece wrap up all the corners and wrap it up tight so it won’t come undone on accident, place it to the side for later use. You also need to a balloon and marker and straight pin for the next part. You will take the balloon and cut off a part where it will fit over the mouth of the bottle easily. Then take your marker and mark a spot where it is directly in the middle of the top and then use your straight pin and poke a hole in the top. Once this is all prepared lay the balloon and a rubber band over to the side separately. Once everything is ready you need to build a launcher, you can use a thin piece of wood lay on the ground at a 45 degree angle. You should attach a drinking straw on to the bottle to hold it in to place on the wood. After all is in place put the Baking soda bomb in to the bottle of vinegar and quickly put the balloon and rubber band on the bottle. Then place it on the piece of wood, you will only have a few seconds to do this entire thing so act fast. When you do this project you will need to be very careful and work fast because if you don’t watch out it will go off in your hands or worse your face.
