Boston Marathon Argumentative Essay
On April 15th, 2013 in Boston, Massachusetts, there was a bombing attack that killed two innocent women, a young child and wounded over two hundred. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his older brother were accused to be the bombers and after the older brother was killed, along with a Boston Police Officer, Tsarnaev’s face was on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. When the issue was released, the picture caused a huge controversy on whether or not it should be the cover photo. Some stores refused to sell that issue of the magazine and people also refused to buy it. But then some people thought that the cover was fine and showed things people wouldn’t think about. The people against the cover think that it was an awful idea to put Tsarnaevs picture on the cover of the magazine. The mayor, Thomas Menino, thought that Rolling Stone should have done a cover story on the victims, survivors, and responders instead, saying that they deserved it more than Tsarnaev. Ed Kelly called the cover “insulting”. He said that using the photo was one thing but that the photo that they used showed youth and innocence. Kelly says that what Tsarnaev did to the city and the country is unforgivable and he thinks that its disturbing that the media chooses to “celebrate it.” A police officer who was injured in a shooting involving the bombing suspects also criticized the cover. He thinks that the cover brought too much attention to the suspects and not enough to the victims. With him and his family personally getting affected by the Tsarnaev brothers actions, he is very against the cover and cannot “condone” it.
