Bore Holes
Construction practice
Assignment 1
For this project we have decided to use bore piles as a foundation. When using bore piles firstly the hole has to be drilled to sufficient design depth, in accordance with plans, using a temporary casing and auger that are situated on a Kelly bar. The temporary casing is installed to the necessary depth, this supports the pile bore through unstable soils. Pile bore extended generally using augers or a digging bucket. Support fluid (benonite) will be added if soils are loose and are generally incohesive at the design depth. Once the design depth has been reached the reinforcement cage is put in place in the hole. The concrete is then placed into the bore using a tremie pipe. As the pile is concreted to the required depth, the casing is then taken out so that it can be used again.
The support fluid, benonite, which is the name given to a certain range of clays, they swell up and turn into a gel type substance when it comes into contact with water. It is perfect for when the piles are in unstable ground.
Advantages of Bore piling * No risk of ground upheaval * Adjacent soil doesn’t get disturbed * In a lot of cases bored piles offer higher capacity with potentially better economic value than that of driven piles * Because there are no vibrations existing piles and structures aren’t affected * A lot less noise pollution than driven piles * There is no need for large excavations * They can be drilled up to 50m in depth
Disadvantages of Bore piling * A specialist must be called in to carry out the work * Risk of “necking” the ground * When a pile is completed at least 24 hours must be allowed before any more piles can be placed in the surrounding area * Enlarged ends cannot be formed in incohesive

    a. A narrow excavation (in relation to its length) made below the surface of the ground. In general, the depth is greater than the width, but the width of a trench (measured at the bottom) is not greater than 15 feet (4.6 m). If forms or other structures are installed or constructed in an excavation so as to reduce the dimension measured from the forms or structure to the side of the excavation to 15 feet (4.6 m) or less (measured at the bottom of the excavation), the excavation is also considered to be a trench.…

Soil is a non-homogenous blend of many materials. There are many factors that need to be considered when digging trenches in soil. To analyze the stability of unsupported trenches, the method selected will depend on the critical nature of the project, economics, and the amount of time available for design. For shallow utility line excavations, where time and economics are at a premium, a rapid technique for evaluating the critical depth and the maximum safe slope is required. The maximum safe slope is identified as the "angle of repose." The use of stability charts or tables coupled with a few simple equations is the most efficient approach.…

Digging equipments for construction is a very strong and durable one. They are usually made of steel which can carry heavy materials without breaking and dig to the ground with the use of the excavator bucket teeth. This part of the machine is built like this so that it will break down the materials that it will dig and it would be easier for the machine to do its task because of this feature. As a result also, it is easier for the bucket to dig through the earth and scoop it up for easy loading and unloading.…

Louis Sachar, an American writer, once wrote, “A lot of people don’t believe in curses. A lot of people don’t believe in yellow-spotted lizards either, but if one bites you it doesn’t make a difference whether you believe or not” (Sachar 41). The book I read was Holes by Louis Sachar. This book is about a boy, named Stanley Yelnats, who is ‘cursed’ with bad luck. The ‘curse’ started with Stanley’s no-good pig stealing great great grandfather. During the early parts of the story, Stanley is arrested and sent to Camp Green Lake where boys go to ‘build character’. While at Camp Green Lake, the boy had to dig five foot by five-foot holes. They said this was to ‘build character’; however it was not. This was to try to find treasure buried by Kissin’…

The mat may also be supported, in turn, by piles or drilled piers. Foundations supporting machinery and such are sometimes termed bases. Machinery and the like can produce substantial load intensity over a small area, so the base is used as a load-spreading device similar to the footing. Deep foundations are analogous to spread footings but distribute the load vertically rather than horizontally. The terms drilled pier and drilled caisson are for the pile type member that is constructed by drilling a 0.76m diameter hole in the soil, adding reinforcing as necessary, and backfilling.…
