Book Summary of John H. Walton, Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament:
John H. Walton’s Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament: Introducing the Conceptual World of the Hebrew Bible is broken up into fourteen chapters. Those fourteen chapters are each part of one of five sections. This book also contains over twenty historical images. Before the introduction, the author gives readers a full appendix of all images used in this published work. The author then gives his acknowledgements followed by a list of abbreviations.
Part 1- Comparative studies The first section of the book is titled comparative studies. This section is comprised of the first two chapters. Chapter one is aptly named history and methods. Chapter two has been dubbed comparative studies, scholarship, and theology. This section covers the growing division between scholars of a secular nature and scholars of a religious nature. The purpose of this part of the book is to defend the Bible from the damage done by comparative studies which twisted evidence to work against the historicity, canonicity, and divine revelation of Gods’ Word, the Bible.
Chapter 1- History and methods
Walton starts off this chapter by going back to the late 1800s and mid 1900s, with the rediscovery of Egypt and Mesopotamia. Archeologists were quickly discovering that every bit of history in the Bible was accurate. This was at the height of the theory of evolution and at the prime of the scientific movement. After Darwin, science was just starting to pick up speed. Then, these shocking discoveries put up a heavy barricade between science and theology.
This evidence, that should have been made to support the truth of the Bible, was quickly twisted and turned against it. Archeologists were uncovering data that showed themes of parallel theologies to the Old Testament. This could have gone one of two ways. Either the popular opinion would be that the Old Testament influenced the theology of these societies, or that these societies inspired the Old Testament. Unfortunately, scholars

    Introduction The author, John N. Oswalt, was first introduced to the subject of this book in his seminary studies in the 1960s. Oswalt introduces his book with a narrative of the similarities and differences that exist between the Old Testament and the literature of the Ancient Near East. Prior to the 1960s scholars believed that the Old Testament was unique and did not resemble the literature of the surrounding cultures, but now there has been a shift in thought. Many scholars believe today that the Old Testament is virtually identical to Ancient Near East writings. This issue of differences and similarities will provide the focal point around which the book revolves.1 Oswalt introduces the reader to the definition of myth and acknowledges that scholars differ on the precise definition but that the essence of a myth is its characteristics. His claim is that he will attempt to show that if a myth is defined by its characteristics and functions, then the Bible does not fit that definition.2 Oswalt points out that once a culture adopts the typical belief of the myth (the world is all there is) certain characteristics will attributed to that culture. Among these are the lack of value of the individual, no interest in history, the practice of magic and the refusal to accept responsibility for ones actions. The debate that the Bible is only “history-like” will be the second part of the book. Oswalt informs us that we will look into the characteristics of the biblical historical narrative and compare it with the Ancient Near Eastern approaches and show that the Bible is of a different category altogether.3 Oswalt closes the introduction his argument that the Bible will not allow us to disassociate history from theology.     There a number texts in the Hebrew Bible that prohibit cult images and are indicative that the ancient Israelite religion was largely aniconic. I think first it is wise to define what aniconism is before asking whether if it is fair to attribute the term to ancient Israelite religion and the Hebrew Bible. I understand aniconism to pertain to the texts that prohibit the visual expression of deities and their iconography, most explicit among these of course being the Second Commandment. I will contend in this essay that the prohibition of cult images constituted part of Israel’s fundamental theological development and so paralleled its transition between pre-exilic and post-exilic periods. I will argue that there are a many great number of likely reasons for such prohibition, such as the context of polytheism and the implications this had to ancient Israel’s emerging monotheism. I will consider the textual evidence in the Hebrew Bible which may or may not offer a valid explanation for prohibition.…
