Book Review: Wonder By R. J. Palacio
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
At the beginning of the semester, our first assignment was to pick a book from the school library. In the school library, there were so many choices that I didn’t know what to pick, but when I was scanning through the shelves and saw a blue book with the title wonder. I immediately got the book and knew for a fact that I’ve heard of this book before. I saw that they were going to make a movie out of it and heard that it was such a heartwarming book that would leave you in tears. So, when I assigned this book I felt very eager to turn to the first page to see what it would be about and hope it would be inspirational. My first thoughts of the book were very heartwarming and correspondingly uplifting. The characters struck

Having a routine was something Austin enjoyed, but that all changed when his parents asked him if he would like to go to school. Austin was not thrilled about this he already knew the children would laugh at him or look at him in disgust, but his parents told him that they schedule a tour where he can see the school and meet the principle as well. Austin agreed and there he met Julian, Jack, and Charlotte, who are students who were offered to show Austin the way of the school. In the beginning, Justin was told to help with showing Austin around the school, he wasn’t really on board because it was summer vacation and he really wanted to do something else, but his mother told him it was the right thing to do. When Justin met Austin, he was really freaked out, but then he got used to it and became good friends with him. During Halloween Justin said some awful things about Austin that he didn’t mean to say it, but he did. And when he tried talking to Austin he got a silent treatment and he was confused on why he was getting this from him. So, he decided to ask Summer on why he was acting this way and she told him that Austin heard about what he said about him and Justin felt humiliated, so he went to tell Austin he was sorry. When Julian heard that Jack and Austin were friends again, he was annoyed that he went up to Austin to mess with him, but when Jack saw Julian bullying Austin he went up to Julian and hit him in the face. Even though he was suspended, he knew he did the right thing in showing that he had Austin back anytime. So, in Summer point of view we are showing a little bit on how she felt bad about nobody sitting with Austin, so she knew it was the best decision to sit next to him. Lastly, we read Austin points of view of how he starts enjoying going to school that he wasn’t insecure about showing his face to other people, so he went to

32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

Thinking about the world today and its society, lots of people are judgmental and hypocritical. Yet, some may also be very conscious of every step they take. Having the courage is not constantly running in the face of danger. Nor is courage not necessarily risking your life, in public, hopeless or futile. Courage can be a private thing and do so with hope that things will get better or that their sacrifices mean something. Being the perfect person and not having the courage to go out and live freely is constantly drilled into people’s mind of what they have to change. Continuously having to be looked at and getting disparaged is something 5th grader Auggie Pullman, in the novel, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, has to go through, throughout his daily…
