I have never been to Binangonan or to any place he describes in the book, but the author Clarence M. Batan made me feel as if I had been there in the long sunset of March 7, 2000, when a social researcher named Clarence decided to visit her grandmother, Nanay Biday at the hospital. This book tells us how a typical Filipino family strives hard to achieve comfort in life. I researched first on the Internet the book, which is “Batong Bahay” by Clarence M. Batan, and I found out that this book is a Filipino family’s narrative of poverty and success. The unique title made me and also I think the readers ask what lies beneath the mysterious title, the hidden story of the book is also the reason I loved and enjoyed reading it. The voice of Clarence rings so clear and true. Not only does he make me see the things he sees, he makes me feel the things he feels. There 's a lot more going on than just the trials and happy moments, and Clarence tells you all about it. A man named Sherwin does not mention oftentimes. Upon reading the book I have question at the back of my mind what is the reason why Clarence does not talk much about his brother and why does he have grudges towards his only brother. At first I have an imputation that they do not have close brother ties with each other. The mystery between them is just one of the reasons you want to keep turning the pages to find out what happens in Batong Bahay. Nanay Violeta and Daddy Israel narrate to us their own story starting in their childhood until they met and formed a family. They both came from a poor family who are scarce in money and always no food on the plate; although they have parents who strive and work hard they are in the state of “isang kahig, isang tuka.” They both wanted to finish college and take

Instead, her story was one of defiance and rage against her circumstances. Repeatedly, Ung actively resists the values and propaganda of Angkar (Ung, p. 132). Her family is framed in the same purposive manner. Her mother’s resistance and the depictions of her siblings’ sacrifices illustrate how Ung found meaning in family amidst the horrors. Moreover, the structure of the book resembles many purposive narratives because it depicts fighting against events to return home (Warren lecture). Ung defied Met Bong to visit Ma and she struggled out of Cambodia to return home years later (Ung, p. 152, 160, 238).…

As a child, Josh Mahinay grew up in a poor family (and having total of 8 siblings) all the way in Zamboanga, Sibugay and came face-to-face with poverty at a very young age. He began to realize this while as he was walking everyday seeing his neighbors watch televisions and listening to the radio, thinking to himself why his family did not do the same things other people did. But this did not hinder him from doing what a normal child should do. “Mahirap nga kami. Inisip ko na kung hindi ako mag-aral at magpursigi, wala talaga akong pag-asa na baguhin ang kinabukasan ko.”, he proclaimed. In fact, growing up, his mindset was focused on graduating, and he did, despite the 10-kilometer walk that took him at least 2 hours everyday to go to school. It became a constant reminder to him to hold on to his dreams and education. In elementary, he only put his school supplies in a plastic bag. He would go around knocking on different sari-sari stores everyday asking for a new plastic bag because his plastic bag would rip off due to his pencils. He even mentioned that there were times that he did not even get the chance to eat nor was given allowance. He thought it was a blessing for him to be able to listen in his classes and walk going to school despite the lack of food in his system. He was indeed very determined to learn and to finish his studies as his parents would always tell him that they never got the opportunity to study like he did. He…

After the lecture, Mr. Fabia told Mr. Santos about his farm and his family and invited him over to his house, repeatedly saying that his wife, Ruth, will be pleased to meet “a first class Filipino”. He also told him about his son, Roger, with pride. Mr. Fabia picked Mr. Santos up the next day and during the course of what seemed to be an endless journey to the distant farm, Mr. Santos became aware of Mr. Fabia’s life in the Philippines. He was a spoiled brat and the black sheep of the family. He lived in an old Visayan town where there are no apples. But there are coconut trees and roosters cooing early in the morning, and there was his family.…

To others, he was a soldier, banker, civic leader, philanthropist, and a servant of the church. He had already touched many lives and inspired many individuals to serve others. The Hero who was once a soldier struggling for peace and order in times of war had become The Man of charity, integrity, and loyalty to his fellow countrymen and to the Supreme One. But for me, he was a doting and ever-supportive great-grandfather who gave us presents during the Yuletide Season and present in all our family gatherings and activities. Now, it’s time to go back to his footsteps in Mindanao to find out how the Flores family came to be.…
