The book begins with him in jail waiting for his trial to start. This is the name the prosecutor gave him and the others involved in the crime. He flashes back to when he was ten. He and his friend are throwing rocks and breaking windows then running from the owners. He is with strangers now. He eats, sleeps and even has to go to the bathroom in front of them. Sandra Petrocelli is the prosecuting lawyer and is good. She is pushing for the death penalty. Ms. Petrocelli describes him as a monster. Why? She sees a young, black teenager. She stereotypes Steve. She assumes that he would commit the crime by his association with Bobo and James. To her he seems ready to confess. However, I see that Steve plays no part in the crime. He is not a “monster.”…

Monster presents its audience with a unique experience: they get to decide the fate of the main character by being presented with the facts, before the judge presents the final sentencing. It is a story of racism and class and how that affects the judicial system. The idea maybe innocent until proven guilty, but in many cases of African Americans on trial, the sentence is often decided before the trial begins. This conflict of race not only applies to the person on trial and the judicial courtroom, but can find itself with the lawyers that defend them. At the end of Monster, Steve Harmon’s lawyer, Kathy O’Brien, turns away from Steve after he has been found innocent of murder. We, as the readers, are never…

Cruz also has a “tough guy” reputation and persona, he is clearly an insubordinate, regarding his response to Steve. Which makes it ever more likely that he would lie under oath in order to incriminate Steve, who had challenged his authority. The woman who said that she was in the store shortly before the actual robbery and murder took place, her statement only places James King in the store during that time. By her account she was the only one in the store prior to the arrival of the two perpetrators.(162-164). There are a number of horror movies that come out each year. It seems that movie goers are fascinated with the gore and brutality that comes with this genre. Each movie has its own individual plots, but there remains a “monster”, the character that inspires fear and brings suspense. The monster is what makes each movie unique. One of these is Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise. Michael Myers or better recognized as the man with the white mask, is the most misunderstood villain in my opinion. He was committed to a sanitarium as a kid for the murder of his older sister. After fifteen years, the villain escapes and starts his killing spree on, you guessed it, Halloween. What haunts me is not the fact that he is a killer, but that there is little to no background on what made him in to the monster he is.…
