Book Review: The House of Hades

At the conclusion of The Mark of Athena, Percy and Annabeth tumbled into a pit leading straight to Tartarus. The other demigods follow Percy’s instruction to meet them at the mortal side of the Doors of Death located in Epirus, Greece. Now, in this next instalment in the Heroes of Olympus, The House of Hades, Percy and Annabeth must cross the most miserable place unimaginable with the help of the Titan Bob, while their demigod friends aboard the Argo II still fights their way through the Mare Nostrum-or as mortals call it-the Mediterranean Sea. Both are standing at crossroads. In about a month, the Roman demigods will march to Camp Half-Blood to begin war, and Gaea will finally rise. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.
Our dear Uncle Rick has done it again. He has created the most gripping tale by far in his Percy Jackson world. The demigods not just have to battle horrifying and terrifying monsters, but also their own true fears – something much worse than having a physical wound.
Even though we have met some of the characters in the last series, they still never fail to surprise us in every chapter. Rick carefully developed their personalities and characteristics, such as when Percy & Annabeth’s love was challenged as they travel through Tartarus, and also Nico’s shocking revelation. Percy will also experience the consequences of what he has done in the past years that he thought at first was the right thing to do-consequences involving losing Annabeth forever. For the new characters, Rick showed us their different sides and aspects. We may think we really know them, but we will find them walking the different path than they might have expected. Each character was written with care, showing their deepest secrets, and the friendships & relationships aboard the Argo II

We landed at the original Rome, in Italy. Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon, and Annabeth Chase, Blessing of Athena, went off on their business on the "Mark of Athena". Frank Zhang, Hazel Levesque, and I are left. I say, "Let's go there". We walk to a store. A bunch of people is staring at us with glowing eyes. We run across, but are sucked into a wall black, very black and end up in a huge room. Frank turns into a bear and crashes into a wall. The floor rumbles. "Frank, come back!" I holler. We get into a circle, and get into a defense position. Then a hidden door opened, and eidolons or possessing spirits come in mannequins. Hellhounds, Laistrygonians and Cyclops, which are giants, came in and attacked. I took Greek fire, or fire that burns on anything, even water. I created a fire wall with five-foot radius. I kept creating spikes, and firebombs. The monsters would not die because the Door of Death or magic doors that stop dead people from not going back to life again, are open.…

The story of Orpheus and Eurydice is one that has been retold countless times over the years. It started as a Greek myth, later being made into a movie titled Black Orpheus. After reading the myth and watching the movie, it is easy to see that there are far more differences in the two works than similarities. These differences are not only in the way the story is told, but also in the organization of the events that take place and in the description of the characters. The main differences in these two versions include role of the characters, the main plot scheme, and the journey into the underworld.…

In her conclusion Glynn puts forward the idea that the motif of a Herakles and Triton locked in battle is connected to the “Athenian amphibious success”, in regards to the battle for possession of Salamis. This in turn, she argues, is connected to “Peisistratean Athens”, and the tyrannical family that held the city at the time. Suggesting that Peisistratos skillfully manipulated this and other myths so that they were more suited to his own purposes. Creating, in a sense a different iconology that better reflected this time in…

In the realm of epic poetry, heroes go off and accomplish great things, while dealing with deities and mortal beings alike. This is no different in Homer’s The Odyssey or The Epic of Gilgamesh. In The Odyssey, the tale is recounted of the great warrior Odysseus trying to return home to his wife after fighting a great war. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, it is told of how a demigod, Gilgamesh, faced retribution for poor leadership and manages to redeem himself. However, with all the similarities and conventions of epic poetry, there are also many differences, such as character traits and the nature of obstacles faced by the heroes as well. Even though Odysseus and Gilgamesh possess great importance to the realities in which they exist, Gilgamesh’s impact on his reality is much more negative than Odysseus’s.…

Sometimes, even in the darkest times, love will find you. In the fantastic book by Rick Riordan, House of Hades, the two main characters, Percy and Annabeth, fall into the depths of Tartarus together. Throughout the book, we see them struggle through the murky abyss to the Doors of Death, while their friends make their way towards them in Greece. Both sides must be closed in order to stop Gaea. The story does end with Percy and Annabeth completing their journey safely. During the course of the book, I see two themes that shine through- love can overpower fear, and sometimes, you must face your fears in order to save your friends.…

A.E. Stallings writes “The Companions of Odysseus in Hades,” employing a plural narrative to effectively convey a powerful theme. The poem describes what happens to Odysseus’ companions after they eat the cattle of the Sun god, Helios, despite being warned not to. As a punishment for their actions, the companions are sent down to Hades, while only Odysseus lives. The plural narrative is a unique literary element that is rarely used in literature because of the challenge it poses to the writer. It is considered to be enigmatic and technically demanding. The plural narrative is difficult to incorporate into a piece of writing because it is too infrequent that a group of people is all in unison with one another. Stallings creates a poem…

As you are an “Employee of Hades,” and a god of death, I have several questions for you. I know you are a very busy god, and I thank you for taking time out of your job to read and respond. I mean, people pass away all day, every day, so I will try to be brief. Firstly, there is a large amount of rumours about your appearance. Is it true that you have large wings? On many pictures and vases, you are portrayed as a ancient warrior with a helmet and beard, along with the wings mentioned before. Is that the truth ? If you have been depicted falsely, what is your true appearance, and why do authors and artists alike depict you in other ways?…
