Book Review - Dog by Daniel Pennac
DOG by Daniel Pennac
DOG, by Daniel Pennac, is a wonderful book about Dog, the main character, and Plum, his owner. The story begins with Dog, sleeping on the cold tile floor of the kitchen. He isn’t eating, nor is Plum. Dogs’ bad dreams are coming back, recounting his life. He dreams of his foster mum, Black Nose, and her death. He dreams of how he left the dump, in search of a mistress. Dog encountered many problems in his puppyhood. Dog then dreams of how Plum became his owner, and the friends he made and lost.
When Dog wakes up, Plum and the family are packing to go on holiday. They are going with a caravan, which Dog stays in. Plum makes Dog a beautiful box to stay in, and they begin the drive. The problem of the story is a sad one and Dog gets his revenge. Eventually.
The way the storyline is arranged is very orderly and fits the story very well. Dog encounters many foes, who become allies, and makes friends such as the Artist, the Italian, the Egyptian, Hyena and many more.
They plan a plot of revenge, one that proves to Plum that you have got to love your pet, not ignore it. In the end, Plum loves Dog more than she loved him before.
DOG is a sweet story of friendship that blossoms into a full-fledge story of beauty. Daniel Pennac has made this story of relation between pet and owner into away of understanding pets.
Plum, the little girl mistress, is a lovable character, who learns more than anyone else in this novel. Plum learns that friendship is more important than fun and games, and that she should respect her pet, not neglect its’ existence and forget it.
DOG is certainly a story for anyone, and the moral is that exclusion of someone will just ruin your friendship with them, and that everyone deserves respect, even the smallest and most insignificant person in your life. However, the only problem with DOG, is that it was translated from French to English, so sometimes the words get a little bit messed up. Otherwise, it is a beautiful book with beautiful, lovable characters. 4 STARS

The Metro Dogs of Moscow was a quick and fun book about dogs and their adventures in the capital of Russia. The author started the book right on point, which made me want to read more. Most chapters ended with a cliff-hanger, which kept me going, and the book ended clearly. JR was my favourite character, and the way that Rachelle Delaney described his wacky personality amazed me. My favourite part was when JR and Boris tour the Kremlin,…

The main character is India Opal Buloni but everyone calls her Opal. Opal is ten years old. Opal's dad is a priest. Opal's mom left her and her father when opal was three years old. Opal never knew why her mother left and she was very sad about it. In the beginning of the book, Opal moved to a trailer park in Naomi Florida. Opal did not have any friends. Her father, the Priest, had a small congregation and he was usually busy. Opal didn't talk to him often. Opal's best friend is a loyal dog-named Winn Dixie. Opal tells him everything that she wishes she can tell to her mom. It all started like this, Opals dad asked opal to go to the store and buy milk and eggs. When Opal just steped into the store there was a man that worked in the store yelling “there are No dogs aloud inside the store who’s dog is that”. Opal turned around and saw a dirty filthy big and really ugly dog messing up the store. The man said that if no one claimed the dog then he would have to call the shelter to come pick it up. Then a second after he said that Opal screamed (he’s mine!). Then the man asked if he is yours then can you make him come to you? Opal got very nervous the second he said that. Then the dog and Opal made eye contact and smiled at each other. Opal called the dog and said come boy come Winn Dixie. And the dog gave her a weird look and 2 seconds later got closer and closer to her and finally came to opal and licked opals hand. After that opal took the dog home and told him to stay in the backyard while she whent to ask her dad if they can keep it. When opal came into her dads room he quickly turned around and asked her “did you buy what I told you to buy”? Opal quickly answered “ Yes father I did” as she handed her dad the bag. Then opal said to her dad “dad you know how I always wanted a dog”? “Well I kind of found a stranded dog in the store and he is really nice, can we please keep him”? Opals dad whent silent for about 5 minutes straight. Then he replyed…

I chose John Updike’s Dog’s Death because it grabbed my attention and invoked an emotional reaction to the dog’s untimely death. I dislike dogs and poems but somehow the author had me smelling, seeing, hearing and feeling what he was saying. The poem is in narrative form and the story flows from beginning through to the middle and to the end. The setting was the narrator’s home where the dog was a valuable family member. He used personification; “She must have been kicked….,” to portray the dog as a valuable family member. His use of personification gave the dog human like qualities. He also used the personification to stress the emotional impact that losing a loved one had on the family. He started with imagery using the narrative form and he continued using it throughout the piece to created visuals to set a tone of sadness, grief and empathy…

    Animal Farm Book Review

Even though the book was interesting and entertaining, I dislike some features of the book. On a scale of 1-10, I would rate the book 4 stars because the story includes themes on violence, lack of equality, and even the corrupt use of power. First of all, brutality is portrayed by Napoleon because he requires innocent animals and even his rivals to confess their crimes and be murdered publicly. For example, according to Animal Farm, the text states, "Immediately the dogs bounded forward, seized four of the pigs by the ear and dragged them, squealing with pain and terror, to Napoleon’s feet. Napoleon now called upon them to confess their crimes. When they had finished their confession, the dogs promptly tore their throats out" This quote proves…
