Death’s story first opens on a train in 1939 with the nine year old book thief, Liesel Meminger, traveling to Munich to be handed over to her new foster parents. Multiple more air-raids continue to occur and Liesel reads some of her books in the shelters to keep people calm. The residents of Molching also witness the marching of the Jews to the concentration camp, Dachau. This procession makes Hans help a stumbling Jew and get whipped for his actions. Due to this, Max is forced to leave the Hubermann house, so he will not get caught when the Nazi Party searches the Hubermann house. When men do come, they go next door to recruit Rudy for a special school, but his parents refuse. Hans finally gets his punishment and he is drafted in the war along with Rudy’s father because he refused to let Rudy go. The presence of death reveals itself to the book thief within both celebration and mourning as her life of words cycles on. In a state of partial sleep, Liesel “could see without question that her younger brother, Werner, was now sideways and dead… [for] his blue eyes stared at the floor seeing nothing” as Death tenderly “knelt down and extracted his soul” (20-21). The book thief’s primary encounter with Death would always stay with her as she watches her sickly but beloved brother depart from this world in a train carriage. Liesel senses Death’s presence as she gazes at the dying pilot and the two “recognized each other at that exact moment” from the scene of “a train and a coughing boy [as Death] slowly extracted the pilot’s soul from his ruffled uniform and rescued him from the broken plane” (400-401). An intimate sharing of identity occurs as Liesel faces the sight of death’s mark on humanity alongside Rudy and recognizes a sense of solemn passing in this occurrence. This passionate adolescent witnesses death at its climax as she sees “the bodies of Mama and Papa both lying tangled in the gravel bedsheet of Himmel…

No one believed she was smart enough to read, and instead of being placed in her age appropriate classes, she was out with the kids at her reading level. Hans himself cannot read that well, but she knows any help is better than none. Hans, referred to as Papa by Liesel, began to teach Liesel basic reading skills every night. The power of words…it is shown in this book, it shows how people are destroyed and how people are saved from words. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak shows his audience that words have the power to heal or destroy. Liesel, the main character and the book thief, Max the jew, and Hitler the fuhrer are the ones who show how they have used words to affect others in both positive and negative ways . When Max becomes a part of her life however, she begins to truly see how Hitler’s use of oratory to brainwash Germany and compel the German people to turn against enemies of the state. After a rally with the HJ she hears the man at the podium condemning Communists and Jews, and Liesel makes the shocking connection between Nazism and the fate of her family, as her father was a Communist. She ends up retaliating and takes a banned book from the burning at the rally and hiding it in her shirt, (Beneath her shirt, a book was eating her up (Zusak, 122). The Shoulder Shrug, the smoldering book she stole, symbolized her lasting memory of her family in retaliation against Hitler for targeting his family for being Communists as an act of rebellion against his regime. This moment of realization proves that propaganda can cause people to do awful acts. The dangers of conformity are also seen when looking at how they perceive you as a…

In The Book Thief (2005), Markus Zusak, illustrates many different themes but there are two themes that are consistent throughout the book, death and the power of words. The novel has shown the development of Liesel as a citizen in Germany who has a cloudy understanding of death and the power of words in the beginning to a much more matured, knowledgeable view of these themes. There is a relationship between Liesel and the characters that can be portrayed by the connection of death and the power of words ; the demonstration of these two themes are redundant throughout the course of the novel and all leading back to Liesel.…

It is unique because, unlike other stories around the Holocaust, The Book Thief is narrated by Death. The way Markus Zusak uses Death to tell the story in a personal way, gives a different perspective for the reader. The story is about Liesel Meminger’s new life with a foster family; and how she grows to love words and writing. Death’s narration is personal because it gives a detailed account of Liesel’s life and he talks about himself. The narration style is overall freestyle – a mix of first person, second person, omniscient, and metafictional. Markus Zusak portrays Death differently from other portrayals of death, like the Grim Reaper, through these styles of narration. Also, the use of Death as a narrator makes Liesel’s story more special because she impacts Death, and wants the reader to be impacted as well. The metafictional narration style is what interests me most because it enables me to understand Death’s character and reveals his humanness. In accordance this essay focuses on the following question: what effect may Death’s narration in The Book Thief have on the reader and what does the reader learn about…

Albert is rewarded for his kindness, his reunion with Joey at the end of his story is his return for his kindness and hard work in the war. Liesel, on the other hand, is almost punished for her actions; she does not get any reunion with a long lost friend, she gets no happy ending, instead she has everything taken from her at the end of the story as her family and friends are killed in an indiscriminate bombing. The hatred for the other side, Ally or Central, in World War I and the genocide of the Jews in World War II were combated by the average citizens back home, who sympathized with their enemies and sheltered Jews from the searching eyes of the Gestapo. This is shown as Albert is not as happy as he thought he would be fighting in a war, seeing the brutality of it, losing friends and killing people back to back; and Liesel sees that no matter how good or kind people are, the world does not care with her alone surviving due to her books, while the kind Rudy, Hans, and Rosa are wiped out by bombs. It was this dual kindness and cruelty that made Death afraid of humans and crushed Liesel’s spirits for…
