Body Ritual Among The Nacirema
The Nacirema are a society obsessed with the presservation and maintenance of their bodies. They have many body rituals, some thats are conducted in private, others that require the assistance of certain knowlegable medicine men. After reading about this tribe I was shocked at how much they focused on their appearance. "Body Ritual Among the Nacirema" was actually written about Americans. Horace Miner chose not to directly reveal this, in order to demonstrate people' ethnocentric tendencies. From the time we are born we learn the "norms" of our society and we then use those "norms" to judge other sociological groups. As I read about the Nacirema I couldn't help but think how odd their body rituals are, when in fact they are the very rituals

    After reading the article “Body Ritual among the Nacirema”, I can’t help but notice blatantly obvious similarities between our culture and theirs. Their rituals, rites, and customs are bizarre in nature and seem to illustrate a nearly obsessive fascination with the human body. The main focus of their culture appears to be shaming people based on their appearance and forcing them to conform to the societal norms. Upon further reading, I noted that while the Nacirema put a high value on the upkeep of their bodies, they made it exorbitantly expensive to do so, even if a tribe member was dying of sickness and the supplies, or “potions”, were readily available to cure him/her.     Body Ritual among the Nacirema” tells the story of the “unusual aspect” lifestyle and the rituals of the Americans. Miner uses a unique approach to describe not Nacirema but the Americans by using an outsider's view, a person who does not understand American's lifestyle.     Though it is quite common in many cultures to focus on physical appearance, the Nacirema appear to perform these rituals in a manner that conveys they are dissatisfied with their appearances. Many of the Women in the Nacirema culture perform peculiar alterations to their bodies, which vary greatly in both complexity and permanence. These activities generally take place in special rooms that have been constructed to make their activities more efficiently. Some of the more common activities including removing the majority of their body hair with sharp instruments and even ripping it out using strips of wax. Painting of the face, mainly eyes lips and cheeks was also a daily occurrence before social encounters, in addition to extreme attention to detail to the hair on their head. The woman would daily clean their hair with one potion, then make the hair softer with another. After drying their hair they would engage in variety of styling techniques ranging from making curly hair straight using heat (which apparently can damage the hair) to making straight hair curly. After applying facial paint and altering their hair the woman spent considerable time trying on various wardrobes that they felt would best fit the social occasion.
