Tumblr – Fantasy world, it’s not REAL.

Word Count of Written task: 877 (limit 800-1000)
Word Count of the Rationale: 257 (limit 200-300)

Rationale Mass communication. What is it? It is an academic study of how individuals and entities relay information through mass media to large segments of the population at the same time. The information is usually passed on through newspapers, magazines, radio, television and films, as there are used for both disseminating news and advertising. The content of “Tumblr- Fantasy world, It’s not REAL” is linked to mass communication as this article would most likely to be published in the newspaper by the guardian. The audience for this newspaper would be 25+ year olds as the language used is formal and not of interest to a teenager of nowadays. The purpose of this article to be in a newspaper such like the guardian would be to create awareness to the adults about how networking websites can invade ones social life which also leads into making the wrong decision in priorities. The image used in the beginning of the article is a collage of all theTumblr blogs made by one person. The purpose of this image with this article is to show the audience how one blog is not enough to fill one’s free time. The article is more opinion based on how the writer (I) think of people generally having Tumblr blogs, therefore the article is biased based on one person’s perspective. The claim of the article above is that if Tumblr is being used by today’s teenagers it should be used to an extent to which it would not lead to addiction which would kill the social life.

In a recent study conducted by Matthew Brashears of Cornell University, 2,000 adults were asked the number of friends whom they share a close relationship with. The average response was 2.03 and it decreased from a similar study from 1985, which received an average response of three close friends (Silard. “From Face-to-Face to Facebook”). It is proven that humans thrive on human interaction, so cutting that face-to-face off could damage humans negatively by causing them to suffer more health problems due to physical inactivity and no interaction. “People who, like the Facebook COO, claim that we have never been so connected with each other are missing a vital point: the people making all these "connections" through the Internet and social media are, in the non-virtual plane sometimes referred to as "reality," sitting alone in front of a pixelated screen.” (Silard.). Even though we are able to interact with different of people from around the world, we become isolated from the people around us. People cut off their friends and family and would rather spend time on the…

Mass Communication refers to the process in which specific messages are passed through mediums of communication from one group of people or organization to another usually through the acts of advertising, journalism and politics but most popularly through television and the world wide web. The impact from both these mediums has resulted in the birth of entertainment culture, an amalgam of many genres and cultures including that of the social and political. Gladwell explains how the people interact with each other on social media and come together with people they may not know or have very little communication with and solve a problem. He refers to this type of partnership as “weak-ties”. The platforms of social media are built around weak- ties and could connect you to thousands of people who you haven’t ever met in your life. Sociologist Mark Granovetter says that having all of these “friends” on Facebook or a bunch of…

Mass media is any medium designed to communicate messages to a mass audience (Webber & Ravelli, 2010). The main devices used in our society today are the television, satellite radio, Internet, cell phones, and text messaging. Our technology has advanced over the years and mass media today is far more effective in spreading its message globally then ever. Our generations in society today such as the gen-x and gen-y are far too reliant on these devices. I believe that technology has made our daily lives more efficient but at what cost, it has so many harmful ramifications when it is used in a non-constructive way. One incidence that proves how dangerous the mass media can be is the Columbine High School massacre. It was the fourth deadliest school massacre in the United States. Two senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold on April 20th, 1999, went to their school and went on a shooting rampage. Killing 12 students, one teacher, and injuring many others and then committed suicide later on.…

The values and characteristics of a healthy community have remained largely unchanged over the years; however, with the invention of online communities they have become significantly more impersonal. Accepting people for who they are and showing empathy towards others are indispensable values of a community. The values of a traditional community as outlined in Azar Nafisi’s essay “I believe in empathy” and Sarah Adams’s essay “Be cool to the pizza dude” are being threatened by modern day technology. Social networking websites such as MySpace clearly endanger the values of a traditional community. This is highlighted in The Onion’s report “MySpace Outage Leaves Millions Friendless,” as well as in “Someone to Watch Over me” written by Theodora Stites.…

As the Hilary Stout wrote, in the article “Antisocial Networking?” I spend a lot of time on social networks, also. I am a young student with laptop, cellphone, Internet, Facebook beside me like others in college. Sometimes, I also think that whether social networks is good for us. I have no idea because I am forced to use it to connect with my friends every single day. Now I have a chance to read this article and think about it carefully. Social networks impacts me so much. If the world hadn’t created social networks, I would not have kept in touch with all of my friends in Viet Nam. It is not only bring me the convenience, the cheapest price in communication, but also an opportunity to change my life.…

America is a community environment where people can interact and share their questions through social media. In today's American society, every person has a smartphone, which occurs with software for taking pictures, messages, and web pages. Mostly, humans use it as their second creation. For example, in the story “ Mirror, Mirror, on the Web, Lakshmi Chaudry”, “The editors at Time tout this “revolution” in the headiest prose: “It’s a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It’s about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people’s network YouTube and the online metropolis MySpace. It’s about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes.” It expresses the influence and attraction in the world, as well as in American society, they like to spend time watching shows on TV, calling friends and sending messages to family. Today, through social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram and blogs, which become popular, It shows the influence and attraction in the world, as well as in American society, they like to spend time watching shows on TV, calling friends and sending messages to folk. By surfing the web, I came across an web-journal that featured an editorial on social networking. Written by Maria Quinlan, Social networking makes twits of us all, downplays the need for social networking and how it is deteriorating our society from within. Throughout this article, Quinlan, through Ethos Logos and Pathos, uses examples from experiences that she has witnessed about people being in touch more with the virtual world than the world that is actually surrounding them. Quinlan builds credibility after each experience that she goes through, mostly because they are first hand, and appeals to many emotions of mine because I have witnessed similar experiences.…

Social Networks are, on these days, the perfect way to communicate and keep in touch with your friends and family, and even to let them know about your plans and lifestyle. The disadvantages of using social networks are commonly ignored by users. I must say, I used to do it too, until one day. That morning, as the sun was rising from beyond the mountains and gradually changing the color of the sky from dark to blue. My day was starting like any other day; I brushed my teeth, took a bath, got dressed, went to class the whole morning, and then spent the rest of the day studying in the library. But my day took a sudden change when the sun was dying in the dark and made the sky black.…
