Bless Me, Ultima
Bless Me, Ultima, is a coming of age story focusing on the life of 7-year-old, Antonio Marez. In the beginning, Antonio, like any other kid was blinded to the cruel real world. His mother shielded him from everything in hope to keep her last son pure and innocent. She raised him to be religious and someday hopefully become a priest. However, throughout the novel, Ultima guides him to moral independence. Antonio becomes exposed to multiple life-changing events which furthermore cause him to lose his innocence, experiencing deaths of close people, witnessing Ultima’s cure, and realizing that even the people he trusted the most, make mistakes.
Throughout the novel, Antonio experiences many deaths of all types of people, some he knew closely, and some who were distant. However, the major ones were the deaths of Lupito, Narcisco, Florence, and Ultima, all in which were very traumatizing. These deaths started to open Antonios eyes to the reality of the life. Yet, out of all the deaths, I believe that the death of Ultima was the most life-changing for Antoino. To persevere and keep hope through the death of someone who had such a great impact on his life takes a lot of maturity. The separation of Ultima and Antonio really shows how what an impact and she had on him. Now on his own, Antonio creates harmony between his two families by experiencing and embracing both sides. From Ultimas death, Antonio really grew as a person and being able to make his own decisions without any others influencing it.
In the novel Antonio finds moral independence, from experiences that made him question his Catholic faith. In the novel, Lucas, Maria’s youngest brother becomes severely sick after witnessing the Trementina sisters performing “Black magic”. Ultima cures Lucas using a unique process in which Lucas was cured once he coughed up a huge ball of hair. By witnessing Ultima’s cure and how she was able to cure him when all else failed, Antonio started to question his faith. “The

“From my father and Ultima I had learned that the greater immortality is the freedom of man, and that freedom is best nourished by the noble expanse of land and air and pure, white sky” (Anaya, 228). Tony’s father then talks about the land possessing “a power that can fill a man with satisfaction” (Anaya, 229). Ultima adds on about the land giving faith for nature to grow and evolve. This means that with freedom and faith, you can evolve and grow. Consequently, Antonio comes to the realization that even though nature had a dark, mystical past, nature evolved and grew with faith and freedom.…

As the dream progresses, Antonio’s dad starts to describe the holy water as the “salt water of the sea” (120). In contrast to María, Antonio’s dad doesn’t have a deity to believe in and wants Antonio to be a vaquero instead of a priest like how his mom wants him to be. This use of metaphor compares the holy water to the “salt water of the sea”. This shows Antonio’s dad's identity, indicating that Antonio has vaquero resemblance…

Blood becomes the river. The human race dies and only the "she-goats and the he-goats" remain (176). The lake "cracked with laughter of madness" and the "ghosts stood and walked upon the shore" (120). Who dares dream such gruesome images? Only Antonio Marez. He argues with God and the Virgin Mary. He commutes with the dead; the dead asks him for blessings. Just who is this Tony person! You might not believe that this is only a seven year old kid, but he is the hero of Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima. Tony is valiant, and this courage sometimes reflects his curiously precocious nature. Precocious he is, he still is in constant mental ambivalence.

When I say Tony is brave, I don't mean that he fights demons or kill dragons, but rather that he stands for what he believe is right and he is not afraid to go to extreme measures to protect the people he love. He shows that he is a "man of the llano" when he "does[n't] run from a fight" even when confronted with Horse, the notorious bully (37). Tony also stands up against a mob for Florence; everyone wants to punish Florence for "not believing in God" (214) and Tony pushes the crowd away and refuses to give Florence the penance that Florence does not deserve. Although Tony knows that he will be given the "Indian torture" (214), he still speaks up for his friend. Anaya often presents Tony as a dependent character, never wanting to "be away from the protection of [his] mother" (51); in fact, he's so close to his mother that it seems that he's going through Oedipus's Complex. Anaya actually does this to increase the impact of Tony's bravery. One might expect Tony to stay in his undercover bushes when Tenorio is standing so close; however, when Tony hears that Tenorio knows the way to kill Ultima, the thought to warn Ultima supercedes his fear and encourages his legs to pick up and run home (255). At trying times, he "stood by Ultima" and "would have slashed out to protect Ultima" (138).

Oftentimes, Tony's…

In the first dream, the woman, who turns out to be Ultima, buried Antonio’s afterlife. This foreshadows Antonio’s true identity being revealed by Ultima right before her death, as she asks Antonio to follow in her footsteps. In another dream Antonio hears his brothers in the woods saying, “ Oh our sweet baby, we are coming home to you. We who had been beyond the land of our father’s dream; we who have traveled west until we were in the east, we are coming home to you” (61). This foreshadows the return of his three older brothers from the war. But yet in another dream of Antonio’s, when the three older brothers cannot cross the river, it foreshadows that once they return from the war they will leave…

    ▪ A letter now arrives announcing Antonio’s ruin. Bassanio tells Portia, ‘I have engaged myself to a dear friend’ (Act 2, scene 2.) Due to his love for Antonio, he even offers his own life: ‘The Jew shall have my flesh, blood, bones and all / Ere thou shalt lose me one drop of blood.’ Portia offers her fortune: what was hers is his; and what is his is Antonio’s. The wedding takes place offstage. Bassanio’s love for Portia makes him extremely reluctant to part with her ring, and he does so only when pressed by Antonio (the fact that Portia finally forgives Bassanio for parting with her ring emphasises that love and forgiveness are superior to self-centred greed). The Renaissance ideal of noble friendship between men is less familiar than the ideal of marriage.…
