Blackboard provides faculty with an online platform for sharing course content with their students, and contains a number of features which allow students and faculty to engage in collaborative experiences through discussion boards, live chat, e-mail and an interactive grade book. Before Blackboard was introduced, faculty who wanted to develop an online course had to have knowledge about building a website, which translated into faculty knowing how to write HTML scripts and managing a domain. Needless to say, this proved to be a rather daunting task for most of Navarro College’s faculty (most of whom did not grow up with a computer in the home much less access to the Internet). In addition, administrators found it difficult to oversee course quality and providing technical support for students and faculty was difficult and…

On the night of November 8, 2010 the Cy-Fairs Board of Education members led by Dr.John Olgletree started out with the accomplishments of their schools athletics, art, dance, and literacy accomplishment thus far. From there they took a vote on whose name should represent one of the new schools that was in the process of being built in the Cy- Fair district. The former teacher Cheryl Salyards was in the running for her name to be on the school. Of the seven board members four of them voted for Cheryl Salyards. A teacher who had taught hearing impaired student for the past thirty-two years. I really thought that was the most interesting part of the meeting because I never knew how the school’s names were selected.…

Mark Twain’s fictional novel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, tells the tale of a young, wanderlust stricken white boy from the south, Huck, who aids an escaped slave, named Jim, find freedom. The story is set before the civil war during the 1830s-1840s. Throughout Huck and Jim’s adventures together, the contrast between both their daily struggles and freedoms is immense. Huck being a white person moves through life with much more ease than Jim is able to even imagine experiencing. Racism affects everyone, not just those who are discriminated against. It not only puts people at a disadvantage, it also gives specifically white people a social advantage. The concept of white privilege refers to an unearned racial leverage that typically goes unnoticed. Structural racism lends to condition people into ways of living and thinking that perpetuate the success of people in certain aspects of life due to their race.…

There is nothing particularly noteworthy about Robert Shawn Keever. He is loud, boisterous, sarcastic, and a man of total depravity. To date he has been in no clubs or sports. He has yet to hold a job, nor do I believe he has the capability to even hold such a responsibility. If it were a matter of GPA, he’d fall short there too as it is 2.3. As a student he has no ambition for higher education and would rather join the military. His relationship with his peers and family can be described as abusive and unruly. In the past he has skipped school and deliberately started fights. Also, he has no faith. This being a nation founded by Jesus would make him an enemy of America and its values. His only saving grace is a profound love for most social studies and a strong sense of loyalty to those who have managed to make friends with him. Thus far he has taken every social studies class Smyrna High School has to offer.…

Would you let your child play a sport to learn important life lessons if it meant they might get hurt? A major controversial topic among parents, and the media today is to let your kids participate in sports or not. There are numerous articles arguing both sides, many people believe youth sports are too dangerous and cause major injuries, but people also argue that sports are essential to the development of young children. Youth sports teach young athletes discipline, valuable life lessons, and how to make new friends and maintain relationships with different groups of kids.…

On my Youngstown State ID user page there is a program for students to receive things from the instructors, whether it’s a syllabus or assignments, all these things are on a program known as Blackboard. Not all teachers use it, but since I’ve started I’ve had just over half a dozen instructors use Blackboard, and this semester more teachers are using it than ever. As of December 2010, Blackboard software and services are used by over 9,300 institutions in more than sixty countries. Although there are many people who do put their assignments and other essentials up on blackboard, there are too many flaws and far better alternatives than this program.…
