Black History Month Speech
Today, we celebrate the beginning of Black History Month, a time to commemorate and honor the contributions of African Americans throughout our nation. This month has special meaning in the District of Columbia. Much of the history of Washington, DC is the history of African Americans, and the history of black America is inextricably tied to our great city.

In 1862, Congress passed the District of Columbia Emancipation Act, making Washingtonians the first freed slaves in the nation. Nine months later, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, cementing the District's role as a vibrant center of African American culture and society as freed slaves from across the nation flocked here.

In conclusion, black history has always been important, but never regarded as such. The education system needs to begin teaching black history the same time it begins to teach white. Although, oppression and triumph are a part of our history, black history does not begin in America. In Keisha Bentley-Edwards article, Black History Month: Change how we teach Black History, she acknowledges that black children need to know much more about who they are. “When the telling or teaching of black history begins with slavery, it ignores their humanity now, just as their humanity was denied in the past.” (Bentley-Edwards 3) Black children face enough adversity in the real world, so why not alleviate the burden by teaching them that their history does…

    Dr. King Speech

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of many accomplishments. From lighting the torch that helped changed the way we blacks and whites communicated, to sparking the civil rights movement, it's safe to say that Dr. King was well involved in helping change racism. During Dr. King's life, he had written many letters, but none were like the letter he wrote to his fellow clergymen. The letter that King wrote to his fellow clergymen was a reply to the statements made by the clergymen stating that Dr. King's actions were “unwise, and untimely”. Now according to Dr. King, he rarely ever took time to reply to negative backlash he received from others, but this particular criticism made a rather large impact in Dr. Kings life. Upon receiving the criticism, King wrote a very passionate letter stating in so many words that men in their position should have more compassion, wisdom, and positive impacts in America, instead of promoting, and condoning the negative behaviors. While writing this letter to the clergymen, King used a lot of detail, passion, and rhetoric, such as Logos, Ethos, and Pathos which I will convey in this paper. I will show examples of King's use of the rhetoric terms, as well as describe the effectiveness and importance of them.…

Every time you go through school you have new teachers. They all have different ways of trying to get to know you. Sojourner Truth was an outstanding lady that fought for equality for all Americans, especially blacks and women. She was born a slave in the year of 1797 (“National Women’s History Museum”). She spent the earliest parts of her life on an estate in New York, owned by Colonnel Johannes Hardenbergh (“Sojourner Truth”). There were a series of laws passed in the state of New York including the Gradual Emancipation and the New York Anti-Slavery Law of 1827 (“Museum Open”). Sojourner’s master did not want to free her, so in turn she ran away. During this time is when she changed her name and began to speak out for the rights she felt she was entitled to. I want to know why are there racists in this world. I especially want to know why is it 2016 and we still have race issues going on in this country. Over the past year we have seen many shooting of African Americans. It is statistically proven that African American men are more vulnerable to get treated poorly for the same crime that a white man would do. I’m not saying that the shooting was all because of race. It’s just the fact of black people are racially profiled for no reason. I don’t think it is fair that I have to be at a disadvantage and would be profiled by certain people because of my skin color instead of my…

I don’t disagree nor do I support Kaepernick’s actions. I think if he wanted to prove a point and make a statement supporting the “Black lives matter” he is wrong to do so by sitting for the National Anthem. By sitting for the national anthem he is disrespecting all the men and women who have fought to serve our country. But he is wrong by saying “black lives matter” and so is Hillary Clinton by saying it too. It’s not just “black lives matter” all lives matter.…

I am white knuckled. I am red cheeked. I am tucked tightly into my scarf and my size 8 red rain boots and I am gleeful and empowered. My voice grows hoarse as I yelp phrases of equality and love. The crowd of us; protesters, activists, members of an upset society, stand together soaking and smiling because we face the unjust world hand in hand. We have hope in our hearts and determination in our eyes and we will help to change the world.…

This was the first Martin Luther King Celebration I have attended at Lock Haven University so when entering Price Auditorium, I was unsure of what to expect. As I entered the auditorium it was surprised to see the diverse population of student that filled the auditorium. Yes, I am sure some were there purely for a grade from a professor, but it was still refreshing to see so my people from different backgrounds together to celebrate Dr. King. Quite a few of these students, as highlighted by Kenny Hall at the end of the event, were also student activists themselves.…

Without proper perspective, a student learning about Black History Month is armed with a list of names and inventions and little else information on what it took for them to get to where they were. Black History Month functions to highlight the overlooked accomplishments of African Americans. The reason there's no White History Month is because the accomplishments of whites and their contributions to society are showcased all year long. In short, Black History Month's goal is to raise awareness and not be taught throughout the year at least that’s how people perceive it…
