In some ways, it's somewhat easy for most of us to become a citizen of the United States. But in the past, it was another story. For example, colonists from Britain grew weary of British oppression over the years. In 1954 the Supreme Court ruled segregation in public schools, unconstitutional. The separate but equal act provided much to be desired for blacks educationally. Today we are experiencing a similar problem. Public schools in communities with a high population of minorities are severely lacking in academic achievement. Public high schools in these communities have been known to have an extremely low graduation rate, while those who do graduate many times academically fall far below those who come from a better district. Right off the bat, the educators are not meeting the needs of these culturally diverse students. It has been proven that Hispanic, Native American, and African American students score lower consistently on standardized tests than do their Asian and white classmates. Although many people do not believe that it is the educator’s fault that they are scoring lower, researchers still believe that the schools need to work on fixing this problem.
