The principal ideologies of the center-left are progressive, social democracy, social liberalism, as well as green politics. (Charles Funderburk, Robert G. Thobaben (1989). In 1975, Margaret Thatcher became leader of the Conservative Party and began to steer it towards what many have dubbed ÔThatcherismÕ. Margaret Thatcher believed in radical change, individuality, and a strong Government that enforces the law, rather than interfering in the economy. She was also opposed to the welfare state. In many ways, her ideology was broadly similar to classical liberalism, and many theorists see her ideology as neo-liberalism. Under her rule, the Conservatives were no longer truly conservative, as conservatives are usually opposed to too much individualism and liberty, and definitely do not want radical change. However, in terms of morality they remained staunchly conservative, believing strongly in the family and in law and order. It can be said then that the Conservative Party had become economically liberal but morally conservative.…

Some leaders in history are born and destined to enjoy more fame far beyond the reputation of their contemporaries. Shri Biju Patnaik was one such rare personality; He was the brightest luminary. No assessment can do justice to his courage and remarkable valour. Born into an influential and aristocratic family in the year 1916 at Cuttack, he left his rich and comfortable life of home to satisfy his passion to serve the people. He entered politics with a focus on odisha’s economic development, to give its people a life of dignity and free them from poverty and deprivation. He began his political career as a Congressman under the inspiring leadership of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and enjoyed his love and confidence. He served the state as its Chief Minister first time during the year 1961-63. During that period he developed his strategy to revamp the rural economy of Odisha with emphasis on small and cottage industries. He fought and lost elections but was never shaken and always looked to the future with optimism. Though his party won and ruled the state in 1977-80, but he with an intention to build a richer and stronger Odisha, preferred to be involved in the National politics and helped, run the first non-congress National Govt. at the center. It was Odisha’s good fortune that he became the state’s Chief Minister again in 1990. It was a great and decisive political victory for the people of the state. His greatest gift to the nation was the legislative act to reserve 33% of seats for women, not only in the Panchayati Raj Institutions but also in all government jobs. It is worth recapitulating the history of this magnetic personality. Biju Patnaik was a big man with a great mind and the country is yet to appreciate his thoughts and contributions that have shaped the thinking of generations here in the state and in the…

On December 6th 1992, about a million and a half men, ‘Kar Sevaks’, all members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bajrang Dal, attacked the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh and reduced the historic mosque to rubble. The demolition was carried out under the supervision of the BJP government. In 1990, BJP leader, L. K. Advani started his infamous Rath Yatra, a nationwide tour making the people across the country aware of the BJP’s struggle to ‘purify’ Ayodhya. During this countrywide tour various highly communal slogans floated around publically. These included Hindi, Hindu, Hindustan; garv se kaho hum Hindu hain; Ramlala hum aayenge, mandir wahin banaenge; tel laga lo dabur ka, naam mita do Babar ka. Advani was even arrested for hate speech on the 23rd of October 1990.…

[pic][pic]Main opposition party Bhartiya Janata Party was left down and out after the 2009 polls. BJP's arch enemy is not Congress but BJP itself. It's leaders have failed to capitalize on core issues of price rise and corruption against the Congress. They should have learned from how Congress and some smaller parties have been able to successfully use the anti-minority tag against the BJP for over two decades now. BJP has also lost a lot of mass appeal leaders over the years. Most popular elader in india Atal Behari Vajpayee has now retired from active politics. Charasmatic leader and face of modern India, Pramod Mahajan was killed in a tragic incident. Stalwarts like Govindacharya and Jaswant Singh were thrown out. Prime Ministerial candidate Murli Manohar Joshi has been made to sit on the sidelines with no influence on national level politics. L K Advani is close to retirement years and firebrand Sushma Swaraj hasn't proved to be a winner yet. That leaves the party with only one leader of mass…
