Bishan Park Secondary School Case Study
Bishan Park Secondary School was founded in 1993. In 2018, it would be merged into Peirce Secondary School.
According to MOE, school mergers are necessary students’ benefit. One of the main reasons why there is a need for the m,edging of schools is because of the lack of CCAs in each school which students are compulsory to take. With lesser students enrolling into certain schools, the schools find it hard to offer a variety of subject combinations, educational programmes and co-curricular activities (CCAs). For example, schools have had to stop the formation of some CCAs since there were not enough people to form a group and other CCAs could not participate in some programmes or competitions since there were not enough qualifying students.

With the Singapore government building newer housing estates , more parents would demand for schools while the older estates with ageing population would have lesser schools.
Also, with the limited amount of space Singapore has, we also have limited amount of resources since there are urban changes with problems such as traffic congestions. Thus, to maintain liveable environment with adequate greenery and a sense of space, MOE have decided to merge schools together and use the space for other users.
There would be many positive impacts when merging schools. Firstly, there would be no staff retrenchments according to MOE. The affected teachers would join other schools to the Education Ministry's headquarters. Secondly, there would be better education quality as the schools will be able to offer a variety of courses and have teaching expertise in specialized areas, meeting the students interests and needs. Last;y, with the building left empty, it can be sold, allowing the MOE to earn more money. The costs of the maintenance and utility bills would also be reduced as well as transportation costs. They are concerned if it would affect the sec 4 batch in 2018 sad would be taking their o levels yet need to adapt to the Bishan park students joining them. They are also worried that Pierce’s standards would drop after merger since Pierce is a much better school than Bishan park. Adding to that, there would be additional expenses in purchase of new uniforms and resources. Their children would also need to adapt to new school philosophy and approach.
